Move from Zurich to Vaud

Hi,

I live in Uster and work in Zurich, but I am considering a job offer from a company based in Vaud. I have a B permit. I have consulted the tax simulator and almost dropped dead! Since most of my job is done abroad or from home office, I am considering to keep living in Uster.

Does anyone have any experience in working and living in a different Canton? Do I pay the Tax rates of where I live or where my company office is? In terms of immigration is there any complication?

Thanks in advance,
Joaquim

Re: Move from Zurich to Vaud

You cannot rely on the tax simulator alone as deductibles vary considerably from canton to canton.
For instance in Neuchâtel your children / dependents are a fixed amount deductible where as in Vaud the calculation is your taxable salary (net minus allowed deductions) divided by you «1», your spouse «0.8» and «0.5» for each child.

I’ve lived in Geneva, Zurich, Bern canton, Neuchâtel city and Vaud.
In regards to taxes Bern and Neuchâtel have been the most difficult in terms of not much deductibles (thus higher taxable revenu).
Zurich and Vaud have been by very far the most reasonable.

It’s best to actually have a simulation done with a tax advisor as to avoid any surprises.

Are you an EU citizen*? If not, you are not assured thar VD will issue you a B permit.

*Or a UK citizen resident before Brexit?

Re: Move from Zurich to Vaud

So sorry OP, what I wrote above applies to people with a permit C, Swiss nationality or a person with a permit B married to one with Swiss nationality or permit C.

Re: Move from Zurich to Vaud

You pay tax where you live.

There is also a timing issue: When you move, you will pay tax for the entire year in the canton where you reside on 31 Dec of that year. So whatever you do, don't move to Neuchatel or some other tax hell in December.

Re: Move from Zurich to Vaud

OP, as I am sure you know, taxes are on the Federal, Cantonal and Commune/Gemeinde levels. The biggest chunk being the Canton followed by the Commune.

As mentioned by others, the Swiss French area has higher taxes than the Swiss German area. You can not get around this. At least you are not moving to the Jura which I understand has the highest taxes.

In case you want to / have to move to Vaud, have a look at this list which gives you the 2021 rates of the different Communes. As a example, Lausanne's communal tax rate is 78.5% of the Cantonal rate while a Commune like where I live is 61%. Typically smaller villages will have the lowest rates. This can make a difference based on your salary.

Depending on your life style, where the company is located etc. you might want to look outside one of the bigger cities to help with the Cantonal tax hit.

Re: Move from Zurich to Vaud

You pay taxes where you live, resiedency. Taxes in French cantons are sick and almost always higher than in German part. If you are earning 100 k + and have no children, taxes in German part can be like 60 % of what you normally pay in Romandie (not to mention cantons like Schwyz or Zug where they will be even lower). Generally the more children or the lower income you have, this difference becomes smaller, but... yeah, I wish we could pay taxes as our friends in Zurich or around.
