Dear god! I hardly dare go back to CH.
All our pensions are in £ and $.
It's really most un-funny
Too late for some - we moved 2 and 1/2 years ago on £ pensions. C'est la vie

have some of your pension assets in the currency of the country you're going to retire in to avoid FX risk.

We never planned to come here (where my roots are) - it just happened, followed our heart and no regrets.

I agree.
Should have had your good advice 25 years ago, Phil, but you were probably either not yet born, or busily entertaining yourself with differential calculus in your playpen!
At least the apartment we own in CH is obviously now worth very much more in £ terms.

Re: Sterling to CHF Exchange Rate

1.345 - I've just opened up a OANDA account and will transfer some money back to the UK. Interestingly, the UK has a savings scheme linked to RPI (Retail Price Index)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2011...d-saving-bonds

which should balance out any future fall in the exchange rate, as I assume the weaker the currency, the higher inflation is.

My rather mediocre salary here, assuming I keep saving some each month, is getting better and better without the need to fight for a pay rise or actually do any more work! :)

Don't see how the exchange rate back to a random country should affect how my employer feels. Plus I'm too busy surfing EF to find out.

Strong swiss franc = higher overheads ......(unless you work for a company that imports into CH)

Please read that very carefully if you are considering investing. I have not re-read it today, but from memory last time I looked there was a nasty catch. You do not get interest at the rate of inflation, rather based on the inflation delta between two specific dates. So even if inflation runs from 4% to 6% during the year, if it is back at 4% by the measure date, you get pretty much nothing....something like that anyway....please consider carefully...

This is not true, I also thought the same, and after vigorous detective work it turns out you do get the exact rate of inflation from when you open the account!

The way it works is by taking the RPI index level two months before the month you invest, 12 months later you take the RPI index level and do the calculation as illustrated here.

so initial investment x index level at end / index level at start = value at aniversary

and then added to that is 0.5% so it's a doddle really and I wish I could buy more!

We calculate the index-linking by using the RPI figures that apply to your Certificate at the start and end of each year of investment (not the monthly changes in between). If the index-linking is positive – ie if the RPI end level is higher than the RPI start level – then we add it to your investment. If the index-linking is negative (known as ‘deflation’) you won’t receive any index-linking. But don’t worry, we won’t reduce the value of your investment.
not that RPI going down is all that likely anyway

Beat me to it... I was just trying to update my previous post but somehow it failed... link here it's positive indexing so any negative RPI doesn't affect your investment, it's akin to buying a call option on the RPI using the paltry interest you would otherwise get from a normal savings account.

I disagree with you on the RPI going down :-s if anything it will go up, as the RPI includes mortgage payments which are at a historic low, so as soon the interest rates start going up there will be a jump in RPI, if no rates rise then there are a lot of fixies going on variable rates which are also quite high, either way the RPI is not going to be negative, it might not be 5% but it's better than most savings accounts I would guesstimate a worse case scenario of 2% and best of 6% but I'm not expert
