I'll bear the xe.com website in mind when I come to transfer though, thanks for the tip.
I tried both xe.com and oanda.com, and found the oanda.com site much easier to use. However I'm sure both will be much better than using your normal bank...

Bear in mind that it takes a week or two to go through all the procedures for opening the account.

I sent some money via UBS ebanking this morning. £300 for 402CHF.

Back in 2010 the same transaction cost me 512CHF.

My child support payments back to the UK have reduced enough to pay for my sons flights out here :-)

One could argue that the Swissie has done nothing; it's that the other currencies are all going to the dogs ;)

I'm sitting on oanda waiting to transfer some money back to the UK. Not much, but I'm hoping it drops to 1.29 just because it's fun to squeeze out a few extra pounds on the transfer!

I just went to oanda.com site for first time and the rate quoted was
1.2933 with only about 20 CHF fee which is brilliant if that is what they will deliver ( I guess your bank will probably go for something like 1.38). I would be interested in this too for future. Do you need an account with them? How do you transfer the money to oanda, I only have a Maestro card in CHF. Can they take it direct from your Swiss account? I noticed also they need proof of residency..

I think there are other threads on this. I scanned and emailed them a copy of a cablecom bill to prove where I live

I've only used them once and it went something like this:

1. Register (twice, it's a confusing website but you register with the foreign exchange thing and then the linked account management thing).
2. Set up a "from" account and a "to" account. For me, from=Postfinance and To=Nationwide
3. Transfer money in. Online from Postfinance, they charged me 2 CHF but an additional 7 CHF "went missing" between Postfinance and the Oanda bank in London. I assume that's their London bank making a charge.
4. Wait 2 or 3 days for the money to appear then exchange/transfer it out in one step. They charge about 20 CHF for this and you get exactly the rate it shows. Exactly what they said in sterling arrived in my Nationwide account.

I just checked CS rates and they would give you 1.3134 with CHF 5 fee. If you are transferring less than CHF 750 they are a better bet. The bank note rate you see at their branches (currently 1.3615) are not the rates used for an interbank transfer.

ETA that's a great rate from Oanda, I'm just saying that for smaller transactions that CHF 20 fee is quite a lot and if you want best value for money you need to consider the full cost of the transaction.

Maybe they needed Swiss Franks! Some people actually earn elsewhere and need to buy things here. Poor people.
