Because we only had a choice of UK£ or US$ and thought we were being sensible choosing a mix of both.
It seemed, in our case, to make sense some 20 years back

Re: Sterling to CHF Exchange Rate

Even just the trend would indicate at least June or so next year if you were going to try and use it to predict parity....but I think as well that something would need to be done before partiy with the GBP.

I'm going to go out on a limb now.

CHF/GBP will never reach parity

Mind I also said that GBP/USD would never reach $2 to the pound.

And what precisely can the SNB do??? Buy more EUR in an attempt to fight the market in a trillion dollar market. They have already discovered that, this is futile and Hildebrand et al, have been left nursing some pretty hefty losses to date.

I still get 1.40 in the vending machine at work (put 8 EUR in this morning, "rejeted" it back into CHF).

Well the two proposals I heard being mulled over was a tax on foreign money deposits or negative interest rates for deposit money.
Realistic or not I don`t know.

Blimey. I'm scared to ask what you think something long-term or systemic might look like!

To the oanda buffs - I have an account now, but it seems that to transfer funds in I need to print off the bank transfer instructions and take it to the bank. Surely I can instead fund my account via online banking? Let me know how you fund your account. Cheers

Printing CHF could give rise in the longer run to inflation and that would require higher rates. At a time when yields on G7 bonds are so low, this would only add further attratction to the currency.

Kind of impractical and protectionist, which would inevitably give rise to some unintended repercussions.

In a similar vein to outlandish solutions, I read a light-hearted proposal that buying Greek and Portugese Euro denominated debt would have the same effect. But with the added benefit of finally totally killing the credibility and reputation of the SNB and people would stop using the CHF as a safe haven currency.

Can I interest you in some Reichsmarks, then? I'll do you a really good deal on them, and you'll make a killing when the market moves the other way
