Re: Trading US Stocks while in Switzerland ==> Owe Switzerland Taxes?

Ok, two people saying opposite things here.

Rather than hearsay, can you please provide a source or authority for why it is or is not legal? Have you sought legal advice?

Any yes, people say things are impossible or illegal all the time, when that is either untrue or something has been lost in translation, or they simply didn't know it was possible. Functionaries do it all the time. They are plenty of examples here on EF. We're all human.

Re: Trading US Stocks while in Switzerland ==> Owe Switzerland Taxes?

Sorry to re-open this thread again, but Im a bit confused... Im trading stocks with Degiro on USA, and some stocks pay dividends that are - in total per year - less than 20 usd probably...

Do we have to still pay taxes on USA? Plus, the dividends that I get from DEGIRO seem to be taxed already...

You claim the US tax back & then pay Swiss tax on dividends

If you fill in a tax return you need to state the dividends & should claim back taxes deducted. No CGT so loss or profit makes no odds.

The brokers have to report everything each financial quarter. If you are registered here, they will report it. Rules have changed...might want to look into Dodd Frank for tips.
So, if you are with B permit - taxed at source at your job -, earn less than 120k and you have a small portfolio of blue chip stocks, do you have to do something?

Theoretically yes, however I never did. When I got a C & declared some assets, I got wealth tax charged for the year in question, a refund of withholding tax & a deduction for management costs. The tax office never said a word as they would have probably owed me 100 CHF.

Re: Trading US Stocks while in Switzerland ==> Owe Switzerland Taxes?

Is the Swiss Stamp Duty applicable when trading with a foreign brokering account on Swiss and foreign markets?
I know that Swiss Brokers charge Swiss stamp duty for every trade but what about foreign brokers?

thanks

US Brokers trading on US markets have no stamp duty. Depends on the market
