In which bank to open a bank account?

Hello,

I need to open a bank account within a couple of days. Does anyone has experience of Post Finance? Which bank has the lowest costs? I need the bank account just for the salary payment and i suppose for paying some bills (via internet preferred). And possibly transfering money from CH to EU.

thanks for your help,
Mari

Re: In which bank to open a bank account?

I find Postfinance very useful and affordable as a transaction account - a combo package will give you both CHF and EURO cards with low cost or cost free transactions online using SEPA ( Euro ).

Setup does take some time though typically 3 weeks for all the stuff to come in by postal mail.

Re: In which bank to open a bank account?

If you want to transfer money use UBS. They have the best fees for that. If you park at least 10,000 there then almost all accounting fees are dropped (i.e. expense free banking). Post Finance gives the best rates and if you park about 20K there, its the same deal with no expenses. You can open an account online and get better interest with their efinance. I have my salary account at post finance because of the better interest and the ATM card is free (including word wide usage). At UBS I have just their basic ATM card (UBS only, I dislike Mastro). In addition UBS has a machine for paying bills and another one where you can deposit your money. As for transferring money UBS has the best rates if you use their ATM for this or do it online. However, if a mistake is made you may encounter a negligible correction fee.

At postfinance I wrote 20K. Its 25K for the plus set and 7500 for the basic no fee set. you can read the conditions here:

Re: In which bank to open a bank account?

And, as mentioned in many other posts, if you are a US citizen, it may be difficult to open an account. Some banks will flat out refuse to accept you, and others (like UBS) will assign you a specially-trained customer "service" rep, instead of being able to pick one yourself.

Re: In which bank to open a bank account?

you can open an account with money-net.ch

they give you free CHF&EUR accounts.
drawback you have to pay 20CHF for the CHF-Meastro card/Year. Even though its waaaayyyy cheaper than others banks. Credit Suisse and UBS charge 40CHF/year for Maestro.

or Postfinance

they are free for students, above balances of 7500CHF/account they charge nothing otherwise 3CHF/month/account.

If you have balances below 7500CHF/month I strongly recommend you to get CHF&EUR accounts with money-net.ch. You will have to pay only 20CHF/year. Postfinance will charge you 36CHF/year per account.

Re: In which bank to open a bank account?

I went with Postbank. They're everywhere and you can access your money at just about every train station. Pay your bills, get an online account, it's really easy. Even as an American, it wasn't a big deal while at other banks, I have heard (though I haven't personally experienced it) it can be a huge hassle no thanks to all the recent US-Swiss bank dramafest. Postbank was really friendly and very helpfull. Oh yeah, and they have a "press 2 for english" option if you ever need to call. Just my 2-Rappen worth. :-)

Re: In which bank to open a bank account?

I needed a bank account for all of the same reasons and a few more (easy wiring of money to my US bank account) and chose Post Finance. I have been very happy with them, especially since I pay no fees as long as I keep CHF 7500 in the account per month. The e-banking is easy to use, and I can also easily pay bills online.

I would recommend ZKB. Good service and i got the e-banking stuff really quickly after making the contract with them.

Re: In which bank to open a bank account?

I don't have a Post Finance account but CS and quite happy with it (or as happy one can get with a bank).

Only thing is if you want to pay with card in the post office, they only accept Post Finance cards. Don't know if there are places (bar certain banks) that won't accept Post Finance cards?
