Deposit cheques in Post Account?

I was told I should open a post account, so I did. Apparently, I cannot deposit cheques (I had a draft in CHF drawn on UBS). Has anyone else had this problem? Is this really an "account" if every transaction has to be electronic or cash? What use is that? I'm hoping the people I dealt with just don't know what they are doing.

I had to go to UBS, get cash (nice carrying a couple thousand in the wallet hoping not to lose it somehow), and then deposit it. All the while being treated quite snobbily by a bunch of old women who don't speak English. That is fine, I don't expect them to, but I also don't expect to be huffed at because I don't speak German, especially when they don't even give me an opportunity to try and articulate what I want before they start jabbering in a snit.

AND I had just bought an umbrella. I was a little out sorts after being sent away from the window by the snotty teller, and forgot it there. By the time 3 minutes had passed and I turned around from writing out my deposit slip, it was gone...and she had no idea...apparently according to her, I didn't have an umbrella. STEALING in plain site at a teller window in the post! So either one of the perhaps two people she served after me, or she herself are the culprit. Needless to say, I need someone to convince me that the post account is useful, otherwise I'm going to listen to these omens and go to Kantonalbank where I was treated very well twice even though I did not have an account. (plus I believe deposits there are guaranteed by the state...does anyone know?) I wouldn't trust UBS or Credit Suisse until I knew they weren't going to fold at some point.

Thanks for your time

Re: Deposit cheques in Post Account?

I gave up on checks. Even Bank Checks are a pain.

If anybody mentions the slightest whim of a check, I stop them on the

spot. All transactions (even from family) are done via bank transfer.
Sometimes costly, but a sure thing. Plus, when the funds are there,
they are readily available.

Earlier (90's), I deposited checks. It cost me 20 Franks just to deposit
them... then it took up to 14 days before the funds were available. The
bank's way of sitting on the money - using it to earn some interest - then
give it to me. Thus, bank transfers. Cost the same without the waiting

Sorry about your umbrella. Should not have left it behind

Re: Deposit cheques in Post Account?

Same thing happened to me when the our mover's insurance company issued a check. Post just doesn't do checks.

I find it rather ridiculous that they treat "paper checks" as an obsolete technology as everything is electronic nowadays. But then when I need to make any changes to my account I need to send in a physical form. Just dumb.

PostFinance or Cantonal Bank? It is not either or. Open accounts at both. And use each optimally. The Canton of Zurich guarantees the ZKB.
