It would be if the card required both the pin and the signature but they only require the signature. And it would also need the signature to be checked.
Recently, we had a EF participant moaning about stolen card, stolen pin and account emptied several thousand francs.

Now if signature were required:
  • The thief would hesitate and be nervous to use such a card.
  • The shop becomes negligent for not verifying signature. Shop would be liable to compensate such misuse.
So I like the idea of belt-and-braces, PIN-and-signature (at least for non trivial amounts).

Noticed you've got Viscea listed as chip & pin and signature both. I've used my Viscea card in the UK and have never
been asked for a signature - just chip & pin.
Ok, good point, I guess I have to be more exact in order to make the comparison clear and fair. The key question is therefore this: if the card has a chip and pin and does not require a signature anymore in both Coop and Migros shops in Switzerland, it satisfies the test in my view.
I am referring to large stores in this case, with up to date terminals. (Because the smaller stores may have older terminals which renders the test inapplicable).

So if Viseca cards work in these larger stores, with the pin and without signatures required, that would be great and I would update the table accordingly. Also, kzs his post suggests that the PostFinance Mastercard is still a question mark.

Re: List of Credit cards and their chip and pin status

some feedback on my UBS Visa card (Optimus Foundation):
CHIP+PIN works at my local garage (in the shop) but normally I have to sign. Deffo abroad need signature.

M-Mastercard CHIP+PINs all over - but they gave me such a shockingly low limit that it's maxed out all the darn time.

I should have Postfinance Visa to test this week. Bye-bye, UBS

I think it varies from place to place, sometimes when my maestro card doesn't work abroad, I'll try the credit card instead. Trouble is, I don't know the PIN for the credit card, I always hope they'll let me sign, but this doesn't always happen.
