I have been looking for a Swiss credit card that not only has a chip and pin, but is a card that can actually be used with the pin code both in Switzerland and abroad. For example, many cards have a chip and pin, but do not actually allow you to use it in stores such as Migros and Coop. UBS is one example, my card was issued in May 2009, has a chip and pin, but still requires a signature in these stores, whereas the Migros card allows the pin to be used on exactly the same terminals!
If anyone has any info, please help update this list, it might be useful for others too. I apologize for this being an image. My html table is not accepted, and I do not know how else to post it here!

So if you know whether your card works with your pin (without signature!) in Switzerland, please post!

My VISECA MC required signature in CH and abroad.

My new SBB VISA asks for PIN in CH.

[Both have chip and PIN]

I should note that at SBB terminals, my VISECA MC required a PIN obviously, but was treated as a regular cc payment and not a cash advance.

My Miles and More Master Card asks for pin both in Switzerland and abroad and has a chip.

At Migros you can only pay with EC though, no?

My hubby's credit suisse visa card has chip and PIN.

It can be used just with the pin.No need for signature and can be used online also.We have used it here as well in some other countries.

But they dont take visa card in Coop.Atleast thats what they said when we wanted to use the card.

Requiring a signature is additional protection against fraud and misuse.

Hashbrown, your Viseca also worked with pin outside of the SBB terminals and gasstations? I mean, it worked with pin in a normal shop too, right?

Tilia, I paid with the Migros Mastercard at Migros, but I am not sure if that is the only credit card allowed. I will check next time :)

Nirmala, can your card be accessed through online banking of some sort, so you can see the statements online?

Goldtop, about needing a signature, although that should be true, I think a pin is safer than a signature, because whenever I sign, 80% of the time, they do not even check my signature. At least with a pin, it is harder for a thief to use the card.

I have a UK Visa Debit Card from Halifax Bank. This has chip & pin. I have used it in Switzerland and PIN has been accepted OK.

I understand that if a store cannot accept a PIN, the signature offers the same protection i.e. you are not liable for losses.

My Viseca card works with chip & pin in the UK - I've not tried it in Switzerland. Same for my Coop card.

It would be if the card required both the pin and the signature but they only require the signature. And it would also need the signature to be checked.

No,there's no online access for the credit card statements. But whenever we have called the credit suisse call center,they were really helpful.

Coop Supercardplus (Mastercard) has Chip+Pin which works in Coop and Migros with Pin (probably a lot of other shops in CH which have up to date terminals).

Would never consider using it abroad.

You already have UBS Mastercard on your list, but I can confirm the same applies for UBS Visa.

I too thought it was pretty stupid to have Chip & Pin and have to sign every time - so much so that I've more or less stopped using the credit card in shops now (just keep it for using on-line) due to added hassle of signing each time.

My viseca MC always required signature in shops and restaurants.

Both COOP and Migros accept MC. Only one accepts VISA, but can't recall which.

P.S Viseca has great customer service. I just didn't feel their gold card (Air France/KLm version) had the full travel benefits I am used to from Canada (ie getting a new flight when yours is cancelled or delayed), purchase protection, etc.

Thanks guys! Two things: can anyone confirm what the deal is with the Postfinance Visa and Mastercards? I know statements are not accessible online, but what about the chip/pin vs signature?

Also, can anyone confirm whether the SBB Visa card also worked for them with the chip and pin in normal shops where they accept Visa? I am thinking of switching to them ;)

I will update the list later. Great that the Coop card now has a chip and pin that works in stores, I had one at the beginning and it did not even have a chip.

confirming that SBB and Post Finance Chip/Pin works on these cards. Used it here. When overseas in CE countries I had to sign as Chip/Pin is not widely rolled out yet there.

Ok, thanks! Now two more to go. The chip/pin status of Jelmoli cards and Raiffeisen cards. I am guessing that Jelmoli pin codes work in shops, as they also produce the SBB card, and I also assume that Raiffeisen cards still require signatures, as they are produced by Viseca.
But confirmation about those would be good. Until then, they get a ? in the table.

Table has been updated, and overall conclusion is somewhat surprising, i.e., that the free and cheaper cards seem - on average - to give better results on the chip and pin front!

Noticed you've got Viscea listed as chip & pin and signature both. I've used my Viscea card in the UK and have never been asked for a signature - just chip & pin.

I have a Postinance MC Credit card - in most cases I have to sign, the pin is not requested... in a few places though (gas stations) I have to enter the PIN (no signature)...
What does it depend on whether in a store I can pay using chip & PIN? Any ideas?

Depends whether the shop has online access to the card issuer. If so, they can immediately get authorization. If not, they want your signature and maybe additional identity for big purchases.
