Invoicing VAT to Swiss company from France

Hi,
I'm a freelance writer, living in France. I've just completed a job for a Geneva-based company and assume that there is no need to charge TVA.

Is there something I need to add to my invoice, i.e:
Exonération de TVA article 259B du CGI

If someone could advise, that would be great.

Thanks

Re: Invoicing VAT to Swiss company from France

You are a French resident and must comply with French VAT law. Most probably you are exempt.

Are you registered with the French VAT or liable to do so? Then you must check with the French authorities.

The Swiss company must declare the import in their VAT declaration to the Swiss VAT office. But that is not your responsibility.

I'm assuming that EU v Non-EU VAT rules apply all over the EU (maybe a bit of a leap!?) however when invoicing from the UK to CH, we do not charge VAT and do not mention anything on the advise of the UK HMRC.

Re: Invoicing VAT to Swiss company from France

It is a leap

Every country has its own VAT rules and even within the EU the rules are far from harmonised (although the EU bureacrats would like you to believe differently)

In case you sell goods (not services) your statement is correct as it is an export at the 0% rate. For services however, the case maybe different as other rules apply.

To the OP, most probably you are exempt, but please check this with a French advisor also in terms of invoicing requirements.
