Taxation as a married couple

Hi All -

I have one quick question. We are getting married in June this year. Does this mean for 2007 we will be taxed as a married couple as by 31st December 2007 we will be married? Or does it mean for 2007 we will be taxed as singles as on 1 January 2007 we were single.
I have received conflicting information so far.
I appreciate your help
Loly

Re: Taxation as a married couple

For the taxbill 2007, the decisive date is the 31st of december 2007.... If you are single on that date, you will be taxed as single, if you are married, you will be taxed as married, regardless of when during the year you got married. So in your case it will mean that you will be taxed as a married couple.

congratuations LOLY!
For your tax bill, apparently it depends on which canton you live. We moved from one canton to another the same year we got married, and the treatment was different. One canton had a one-year lag before we were taxed as a couple - meaning the first year of our marriage, we were still taxed separately - while it turns out the other treated and taxed us as married immediately.

Re: Taxation as a married couple

speaking from experience, you will be taxed as married in 2008. The first FULL year you were married.

Re: Taxation as a married couple

Conflicting answers! They are probably all correct too. You will need to look up your cantonal tax authority online or in the info that comes with your tax declaration.

For canton Zurich its states:
Quote:

You are only taxed as married in the tax year follwing the marriage.

Re: Taxation as a married couple

I live in Kanton Aargau - here we must pay tax in advance I.E. I have the 2007 bill sent in March 2007 and it must be paid in full at the latest by October 2007 or you get threatened with Betreibungs if you haven't agreed a payment schedule with the Gemeinde (it took me nearly 3 years to "catch up" from the Zurich tax calander - this December I think I will at last be in sync).
Does this new married allowance Tax change mean that this 2007 Bill, mentioned above, could be reduced? I do understand that it will be adjusted in next years estimated bill.
What sort of realistic saving could my wife and I expect to make? We have one kid and reasonable incomes? (just a for instance estimate would me nice). Her Christmas present may depend on this

I suppose if we ever sold up and moved back to Kanton Zurich - it would be a nice financial holiday to catch back "down" to their Calendar.
