How is impot a la source calculated?

There's no such thing as a stupid question, right?

I receive my salary statement every month and always wonder why the after-deductions value changes every month. I am taxed at source (Post-doc at a uni, on B permit), and my gross salary is the same every month, but the net salary varies. Looking at the statement, I see that this is because the amount taken out for "Impot a la source" is different every month!!! Is this normal? How is it calculated??

I have tried many things to work it out....thinking that maybe it was related the the number of days in the month, but this doesn't seem to tie up with the numbers I am getting. Perhaps it is related to the number of working days in the month?? I am confused!!

If anyone could shed some light on this I would be grateful - the numbers we are talking about are not huge, but would still like to know why.

Thank you!

Re: How is impot a la source calculated?

is the variation random? Or do the deductions steadily decrease?

Re: How is impot a la source calculated?

Did you only start working partway through the year? The tax at source rate is computed based on what they expect you to earn during the calendar year. If you're earning the same wage from January 1st onwards, then your deduction should be constant. If you started working later than that, then even if you earn the same each month then your anticipated total wage for the year in their calculations may keep changing, causing your tax rate to change and adjustments being made to correct the amount that you paid in previous months.

If they're doing things right, then they should have it all adjusted by the end of the calendar year so that you have eventually paid the appropriate amount, even if this was not evenly distributed. However, it's always a good idea to check this. If you were working in Vaud then I'd be able to give you a link to the pdf with the appropriate tax rates listed, but since you're in Fribourg you'll have to find this yourself somewhere on canton Fribourg's website.

I am sure that the HR department would be able to explain it to you.

Re: How is impot a la source calculated?

Thanks for your replies!!

@Goldtopp - the deductions have been steadily going UP for the past 4 months...so my pay is slowly decreasing every month.

@ChrisW - Yes, I only started working there half way through the year. Have tried to find a pattern in the deductions etc, but other than them going up for the past 4 months, there is no pattern in either the amount or percentages.

......guess StephenR is right, it's one for the payroll people (just wanted to see if this was a "normal" occurence before contacting them.

Cheers!

Take a look at the pdfs linked to from this page. You'll most likely need the 'Barème Général A et B 2009' file.
