Be aware that the maestro card that you get with many Swiss accounts may not work everywhere - I have had troubles in Italy, France and Israel at various times and places. So you might also like to get a VISA or Mastercard card to use for purchases and bills as they are very widely accepted (I think cash withdrawals attract interest from the day of withdrawal though)

Re: best swiss bank to have an account with

so,
I have an account with UBS... had a job and salary for a few months, then the situation changed, a monthly charge of 15 to 20 bucks, just to hold onto the money, with no transactions on my behalf, until maybe August or September, when hopefully the new job and salary start. I went around several banks today in Chur and asked if they would allow a nasty pigdog american to have an account, so I could just take my money out of UBS so not to have any more fees for nuthin'... and the answer was sorry US did you say? hell NO!

Kantonal actually sat down with me, and have given me hope that with the right documents and my social security number, an affidavit of some sort, and a note from my mommy... it is possible I can open up an account with them...

It's crap like this that give ever more realization that I need to get a Swiss pass and renounce my US... it's not to avoid taxes, it's so I can have a normal life, choose a bank because of the benefits, not because it's the only one that will have me, and charge me out the ass.
the whole FACTA bs, was to stop the wealthiest bastards from hiding money... what it turned out to be was an attack on the little guy, more control of what the little guy is doing.

Re: best swiss bank to have an account with

You would think by now an enterprising US bank would open a branch here! There must be plenty of decent business.

I think a US military invasion is used to make space for said US "central" bank to open shop.

Re: best swiss bank to have an account with

Any update on bank accounts for expats? The last post is from several years ago.

Like the original author I'm now investor and have no money except a Swiss salary to pay in by my employer, and a bank card to withdraw cash in Switzerland, Germany and the U.K.

UBS seems to be the big one...with similar big costs!

Re: best swiss bank to have an account with

  • Postfinance still offers the same conditions for private customers.
  • Number26 is a game changer and hope it will be available in CH soon.
  • Revolut is a great multi-currency card.

Re: best swiss bank to have an account with

I agree with previous post. IMO Best bank right now is Postfinance especially if you have more than 25K to keep on the account because then the account will be free and they are in general the cheapest bank in CH. They have other advantages like the fact that there is no withdrawal limits on your account which typically you need to get a "Current accounts" (instead of a "Personal account") at other banks to get, which costs extra. They have great Credit card: the gold one will get you 0.75% cash back which is great for switzerland.

Revolut is awesome, I've used it a bunch of times already. Only caveat right now is that you need Euros/GBP/USD to top it up although they said they will support CHF soon.

Actually it's 7,500, not 25k.

Couldn't agree more (actually wanted to hit the "thank you" button, but it's not there?!)

If you can't open number26 (due to lack of usable address in one of the countries in which they provide their services), maybe use dkb.de as a free, full-service €-account. They also open accounts for people resident in Switzerland, parking your money on their €-VISA-debit-card-account will pay 0.7% interest.

While I use Revolut for out-of-€-purposes, for CHF&EUR I still like the following combination best:

postfinance (CHF) <-> currencyfair("valve" between the worlds) <-> DKB (EUR)

Should number26 open up shop in Switzerland in CHF, that'll be a real game-changer!

Re: best swiss bank to have an account with

I too wanted to go with HSBC but alas did not quite have the funds they were looking for!!

I ended up keeping my UK HSBC account for when I'm back in the country but going with Credit Suisse.........So far so good and the internet banking is extremely simple!
