| | (Some graphs showing) Cantonal differences in tax rates
Attached are a couple of graphs I created showing the different tax at source rates for Zurich, Zug and Schwyz. Out of curiosity I then added Geneva and Vaud.
I was surprised by the differences between Zurich and Zug/Schwyz, but amazed how much our Romandie cousins pay! The range of the graphs only goes from 84k pa to approx 250k as I was constrained by the number of data points Excel let me use. If anyone is interested in numbers below or above (to roughly 1m pa), I can show that too. Likewise any requests for other cantons... I'm also happy to share the base data if anyone wants it.

Hi,
Great effort indeed! But I am a bit surprised by your datas: not on the ranking of the cantons, though in my experience Geneva is a bit higher than Vaud, not the contrary (as in your graph). THe tax rate is also too low for me. How did you compute it? Based on gross or net income or taxable income? Did you take into account the various specific cantonal deductions?
Thanks

The data in each case comes from the tax at source tables from the tax authorities of the five cantons. As far as I'm aware, tax at source is calculated at the average rate for each canton, allowing for standard deductions. The idea being that the average person, living in the average community in the canton is no better or worse off by paying tax at source. Likewise if the person in question earns over 120k they shouldn't receive a refund or have an excess to pay. Needless to say that is the theory and real life will rarely have that result.
As it is tax at source, it is based on gross income (inclusive of benefits such as healthcare, car, lunches, GA etc).

ok, understood. In fact in the ordinary taxation process, Geneva is a bit higher than Vaud and you usually get a refund in Vaud if you earn more than CHF 120'000.

I just picked out some random numbers and between 7k and 12k per month it is more expensive than ZH, but above that it is actually cheaper and gets quite close to ZG but SZ remains the cheapest. A graphing I shall go (but without the Romandie cantons affecting the scale).

Can you please upload the data/graphs for Basel Stadt, Basel Land and Aargau?
Also, when you talk about the monthly salary, I presume you are referring to the Gross monthly salary (including perks, etc.)
Thanks!

Thanks! | | | | | In comparison with themselves or any of the others? Yes monthly gross salary including perks - the number on which your tax at source is based on your payslip (assuming it looks like mine). | Quote: | | | | | and Fribourg if you would.
very interesting | | | | | Again - compared with other cantons (if so which ones?) or on its own?

Very interesting data! Do you mind including Schaffhausen in your comparison (GE vs. ZH vs. SH)?
Thank you so much!

Only up to 250k pa? Why don't you just double the spacing between the points so you can go right up to 500k pa, then we can all see our salaries on there? |
