Re: NYT: Can You Be Addicted To Food?

This article is so over-simplified, it is almost sad that somewhere like the NYT actually decided to publish it. Two studies (one in each decade) don't really give statistically-relevant data to work with and make conclusions from...

Re: NYT: Can You Be Addicted To Food?

This is what I found intriguing:
Quote:
In his book “The End of Overeating,” Dr. Kessler describes how these highly palatable foods — the kind served at fast-food and chain restaurants — change brain chemistry, triggering a neurological response that stimulates people to crave more food, even if they’re not hungry. The sense some people have that they cannot control their intake may in fact be true, he argues, because these rich, sweet and fatty foods stimulate the brain to release dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with the pleasure center. In the process, they rewire the brain, so that the dopamine pathways light up even at the thought of eating these foods.
I don't have any special kind of cravings - but I used to when I was 20something... I ate a lot of chocolate (Mars bars, etc), drank plenty of coke, etc.
Then point blank I decided to "quit". I then experienced withdrawal symptoms...edginess, palpitations - the real deal. Scared the living hell out of me.

Now I'm sort of addicted to good food - when I see a nice, fun menu I agonize forever over the choices. Some preaprations have been impressed in my brain with a ferocious intensity...luckily both restaurants are out or my reach now (one is way too expensive, the other one has closed).

Or - as my post about Jelmoli indicates - I just can't resist the allure of certain specific foods (i.e. cheese). Or maybe have I developed some sort of "collector's habit" towards the lesser known foods.. some sort of "intellectual" addiction.

I'm addicted to chiles, my girlfriend to garlic, and both of us to goat cheese (the older and stinkier, the better).

I don't need to read the article to answer your question with a very big "YES".

I agree you can be addicted to certain foods, but this article says there is an association with alcoholism, and with a family history of such, one has an increased chance of being addicted to food. This is, to put it kindly, is a load of crap.

Yep, I'm addicted, can't live without it!

Especially since I'm such a great cook!

Tonight's dinner, capuns:
