And where did chefs come from? Well, Ethiopia originally. Does that mean pizza is really a derivative of injera?

Tomato is an English word, so tomatoes obviously came from England.

Don't nobody know nothing these days or what?

I once got some bread from Angela.

Which is sort of the base for pizza.

E.T.A. - Come to think of it, there might have been cheese too.

Well: The touristic places are actually aware of this. I had better Chinese food in Zermatt than in any Swiss city. (And I have recently heard that the Thai food there is also the real deal vs the watered down Zurich version.) I'd bet it is the same in St. Moritz and Gstaad - they simply have the customers that would not accept the stuff an average Zürcher is willing to pay for.
Just a piece of reality. Zürich, Luzern and Geneva have more tourist visits each than all those tourist spots you mentioned combined. Exactly the three cities live of inbound tourism. Many of the "business visitors" would not stay overnight without some touristic intentions ! And congress business ? It just is tourism and business combined.

At the other hand I much doubt that the Thai food up there really is so much stronger than the one you get in Zürich. There on one side is the ambiance and your own mood, and on the other side the influence of height above sea-level.

Very true: some of the best Indian food I've ever had in Switzerland was in a Punjabi restaurant in Interlaken: food cooked by Indians for Indians, and not a jar of "curry powder" to be seen anywhere in the establishment.

... and better yet, not a single middle-aged European woman in a sari, neither!
If somebody has a restaurant in Interlaken it cannot be FOR Indians, it must be for a highly sophisticated and wealthy Swiss-British clientele. And Interlaken is not a resort in the way of Zermatt or St. Moritz or Davos but rather a "Dépendance" of Bern

With Bern being often underestimated. My mother always joked about "our federal village" but Bern in regard to nice restaurants is a good place !

Re: How Is Domino's Pizza in Switzerland?

With all the fantastic pizza available in Suisse, how on earth could anyone really consider chain nonsense like Domino's?

The big sign outside, written entirely in Punjabi, would seem to contradict your assertion.

That, and the fact that the place was full of Indians.

Big signs do not mean anything but simply are propaganda And Indians present at certain times only prove that the restaurant owner either has a good link to some Indian tourism agencies or to some Indian newspapers or TV channels

Re: How Is Domino's Pizza in Switzerland?

You can never really compare Dominos with an Italian pizzeria, but... on weekends when all you want is to do NOTHING and relax over a movie, then I find Dominos to be the best combination! I guess there is just something about fast food and crashing a sofa

So, as I said, it was clearly a restaurant run by Indians for Indians.

I must admit that I'm struggling to see your point here.

Interlaken is a bit of a tourist destination for Indians. There's a lot of Bollywood been shot there.

I just put that through Google translate;

Quote:
Hello fellow traveller. Welcome to Swiss.

Just a word of warning. For economic reasons our cuisine is aimed at a highly sophisticated and wealthy Swiss-British clientele.

If you want something authentic you could try Zermatt, St. Moritz or Davos.

Meanwhile, feel free to come in. There's always a large group of us laughing at the locals.

The point is that the reason for the quality of the restaurant is neither the slogans nor the ideology but that his contract with a leading Indian travel agency forces him to live up to given standards. Indian travel agencies DO control not only hotels but also restaurants. I just opposed the romantic side of the matter, but clearly see the commercial side.

I am however perfectly sure that, over the full year, the majority of the guests there are not Indians but a mix of Brits and Swiss. In view of the popularity of Interlaken among Brits, the truth might rather be a restaurant run by Indians for Brits

Yes, the number of Indian tourists to Switzerland has quadrupled since Bollywood started to take "outside" pictures in Switzerland, and Interlaken of course has been one of the places which profited particularily due to its central location in the Berner Oberland
