Re: Tonight's dinner?

Something with pumpkin, garlic and onion (smells incredible) and cauliflower (it's veggie night).

I reserve the right to follow up with leftover (veggie) pizza later.

Coop. «Bell» brand. (We only buy it when it's 50% off based on expiry dates.)

It'll do.

Re: Tonight's dinner?

I smoked my first brisket in three years while visiting my kids and parents in Texas over the recent holidays.

The smoker was a bit rustier, and the wood a few years older, but there were no complaints about the end product — which is all that matters.

Re: Tonight's dinner?

Problem is finding a brisket here.

My smoker's only rusty on the outside, last I smoked was some sturgeon a few weeks ago.

Re: Tonight's dinner?

Sunday night's dinner was actually on a CFF train in the restaurant car. Yes I was feeling like burning a bit of money - you live only once and all that fluff - so chuffed up for the set menu including main plate, soft drink and hot drink. Also ordered a dessert to go with the hot drink.

The main plate was Swiss style chicken Stroganoff with mixed vegetables and spaetzli. Dessert was mandarin cream with creme chantilly and hazelnuts.

Let's start right off the bat - the food looks ugly. It's function over form for sure, here.

I wasn't expecting much taste with these dishes, but they actually had taste, so that took me by surprise. The Stroganoff was pretty tasty, and whilst you can't really complain much about spaetzli, I guess it was a little bit gluggy (but not much). That said, it's not as if they have a nice hot pan to give them a bit of a fry up so you have colour and texture.

First impressions of the dessert you'd think you were having baby food, or a cream dessert that had completely fallen down. They complemented the mandarin cream with fresh pieces of mandarin. It was almost like eating a beaten up panna cotta. Not too bad.

All in all, of course this wasn't the best meal, but what could you expect for a standard train restaurant? Maybe a better price - at CHF 37 it's not bad scratch if you could claim it on your tax return or charge it to an expense account. Definitely can get better two course meal with two drinks with that kind of money - just not on a moving vehicle travelling across the country.

Re: Tonight's dinner?

Tonight's dinner was tarragon butter roasted chicken leg, accompanied with sauteed leeks and peas.

Note to self: canned peas are less than mediocre. Next time, snap frozen in the bag is a better idea.

At least I finished the sliced leeks. Even with two plastic bags over them and well tied up, they still managed to stink up the fridge (no they were not going off).
