Re: raw beetroot

Apart from the farmer markets, raw uncooked beets are also available in Indian grocery stores. Also saw them at a Middle eastern store in zurich.

Re: raw beetroot

I just bought a couple of raw chioggia beets at my local COOP 2 days ago...they were delicious! (I don't remember, but I assume they were from Italy.)

Re: raw beetroot

Hi Motus,

I bought a load of raw beetroot at Migros Kirschgarten in Basel just yesterday. So they can get hold of it.

It's possible they aren't consistent about stocking it - I find this to often be the case at with fruit n veg that isn't considered absolutely mainstream (tomatoes, potatoes, etc)

Maybe you could speak with the manager and have him order some in...

Correction: in Swiss German, they are called Randen. (Germans say "Randen? What? Ohhh, you mean "Rote Beten.")

And yeah, they're not that hard to find. The smallest Migros and Coop stores may not have them, but any of the bigger ones will.
Randen is the mountain range north of Schaffhausen of which the larger part is on German territory. So that the German DISregard for the word simply is stupid

Re: raw beetroot

FYI, I served raw frenched beetroot as part of a crudité platter the other night. Yum! (I got it in the organic section of the Migros, they don't seem to carry non-organic ones uncooked.)

Re: raw beetroot

@ tooki - they definitely do have non-organic ones - in Basel at least. I bought me some and they tasted great ;-)

Re: raw beetroot

Me again... this time I am trying to find some "Schwarzer Rettich"...
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwarzer_Winter-Rettich

I found some Meerrettich, but it turns out its not what I need for my recipe...

Any clue where I could find this (or what the common name is in Swiss German?)

thanks in advance,

Motus
