Nigerian Food Ingredients in Zurich?

Hello, I'm looking specifically for Nigerian food like:
Yams, plantain, Pealed Beans, Pounded Yam, Okra, Egusi Seeds..etc

i haven't been here long but i feel like i have to travel to London any-time i want some Nigerian food ingredients, my local Migros dosen't even sell yam or plantain which i supposed was quite generic!

anyone know where i could go? i live in Enge.

:msntongue: i'm salivating just thinking of it. lol

Try African Queen near Central (Stampfenbachstrasse) it is a restaurant, but they have a African store next to it:

or of course, take a walk on Langstrasse, there are a lot of African shops, selling everything from hair extensions to food.

While this "corner" of Zurich is amazing and as much as I can understand the dreams of this Ugandan as a Zürcher I have to hope that he stays here ! (so sorry Sir ! ) . The trouble is that if a Nigerian asks about a place to purchase Nigerian food, it may not be what chaps from Guinea and Uganda may have in mind. Just imagine that you had, somewhere between Nairobi and Johannesburg, keep alive a shop offering "European" food from Norway down to Sicily and over to Crete !

I so can only hope that my tip above provided a place offering something remotely fulfilling the wishes in question ! Just to look at Arab cuisine. If you look for a Mechouiya in the Mashreek you will get disappointed and if you look for a Shawarma in the Maghreb your fate is not better :p

I went hunting in Weidikon and found a shop just opposite the Migros that sell a few of what I'm looking for, had the yams and plantains, a lot of Asian stuff including fruits & meat (a lot cheaper than Migros i might add)

So even if you're not looking for typical Nigerian food you can give it a try for cheaper food stuff.

Also an Asian food shop nearby the station. (turn right and keep on walking for about 5 min)

I'll go hunting again the opposite side of Migros, and also check the suggested locations. :) looks like i wont b missing London all too much in regards to food at least! lol.

Glad you've had early success in your quest and looking forward to the jollof rice, okra stew, pounded yam, fried plantain etc dining announcement soon. :msntongue: ;)

Quite recently I enjoyed tucking into some Jamaican food that I'd not eaten for ages. Every bite was as if I'd died and gone to heaven. It was THAT tasty!

There is a shop on Langstrasse, opposite the hair salon Caribbean Beauty, which is very close to Limmatplatz station, which stocks plantains, sweet potato, okra. I could swear she had Gari and powdered pounded yam in the shop but it's been a few months since I've been there so perhaps my memory has been clouded by my cravings...Anyway, I digress...

Please be sure to post if you make any other discoveries, I am very interested in finding out, although I shall be stocking up when I get back to the UK.

Hi O'Henry

There are some more shops in Kleinbasel and I am sure there must be shops in Gundeli as well. Most shops in South Asian hands also sell African grocery products. There are also shops in St. Johann, e.g. there is a shop owned by a Kongolese/Swiss couple in Gasstrasse.

Happy cooking

Not exactly downtown Zurich but there's an African store in Uster which isn't so far away that sells food, hair and skin products - http://arcosmet.ch/home.html. Give them a call to see.

Okra is carried by most asian shops here, as well as Globus and Jelmoli (and probably Manor Food).

Sweet potatoes you can find at any larger Migros (MM or MMM).

Plantains you often find at MM or MMM Migros, and at Indian and Latin American shops — look on Langstrasse.

Hi folks, just moved here from Hong Kong a couple of days ago... I'm Nigerian and seriously need to find a place to braid my hair at a reasonable price. It was easier finding an African hair braider in Hong Kong than it's been in Zurich! I'd really hate to have to make a weekend trip to London just to sort my hair out!

Also, would be up for meeting other Africans that live here...

Thanks all!

Aggarwal's at Kernstrasse 27 8004 Zürich sells at least 3 different types of Fufu. They sold it in other stores but slowly one by one they have stopped selling it.

I was so happy to see Migros selling the hot peppers I need to prepare the light soup to go with the Fufu.

I have been in Switzerland for a few years so I cannot take the heat like I used to. I used to use 4 peppers for the lightsoup, but have now whittled it to one pepper and its still super hot!!!!

There's a shop in Oerlikon, I think it's called Beauty Essence or something like that. Near the Coop City/Sternen Oerlikon.
