Marshmallow Peeps: WHERE?

It has "recently come to my attention", as they say, that my husband and in-laws are English. Actually it hasn't, I've known that for a while, but what has recently come to my attention is the shocking corollary: none of them has ever had a Marshmallow Peep. Can you imagine? They are otherwise people of good taste and broad culinary horizons, so I feel certain they will want to rectify this embarrassing deficiency of experience this Easter and not a year later.

Does anyone know where I can get the things over here? Chicks preferred but will settle for bunnies if I have to.

Not sure that DB and his nearest and almost dearest would wish to be confronted with something that is supposedly edible but provenly indestructible If they are available in CH and do not fall under any laws governing dangerous substances, your best bet would probably be the usual:
Orell Füssli on Bahnhofstrasse
Globus / Jelmoli

Re: Marshmallow Peeps: WHERE?

Haribo are apparently distributing them in Europe. They are selling them under the Haribo brand.

If they are anything like any of those other American candies, they're probably inedible to the European palate.

Thanks for this! Had no idea what Mathnut was on about (being English ...)

But in the picture they look sort of sinister (bright dayglo colours, standing in rows) are they really that unmissable? (in the edible sense .. I am sure you would notice them on a shop shelf ...)

Thanks. That was 2004, unfortunately. Can't find anything on the Haribo website to indicate that they still have them.

Shhh.... don't tell my inlaws, but they are pretty near inedible to the American palate, at least after the age of about seven. Cultural icon though. It just wouldn't be Easter without them.

And you can microwave them.

Sorry. Perhaps they just weren't popular enough.

I know, I've had all that: "Try these Twinkies cakes. They're really nice and a cultural icon here. And the best thing is they have a sell-by date of 2040 so they won't go bad if you take some home to Switzerland with you".

Re: Marshmallow Peeps: WHERE?

Tartazine was banned for a time in Austria and Germany (until the ban was over-turned by the EU in 2008

Haribo are German. Perhaps the ban that had something to do with Haribo dropping the distribution of your Peeps in Europe?

If you tell them that you speak about the US-equivalent of the CREAM EGG
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A998021 they will understand what you mean.

They are real Haribo products and will survive being rolled over by some tanks

I think haribo bought the peep concession several years ago. At any rate, there is some really silly stuff on the web devoted to peeps. If I were on my computer, I would provide the links... I remember something linking Samuel Pepys to peeps, experiments with peeps and peeps in a university library.

Eating peeps, however..well, probably not.

Re: Marshmallow Peeps: WHERE?

crap mn- i was sent a ton of them- original yellow and those cool new radioactive purple colored ones. after suffering a few major sugar highs and lows we passed them around to unsuspecting neighbors and have none left. if i knew you were looking i would've sent those things to you faster than you can blink- i think i'm good till next year!

Re: Marshmallow Peeps: WHERE?

I'll poke my head in the American Store and see if they have any.

We never had them when I was a kid. There was a clear divide between different family types in our neck of the woods. Little Debbie families, Hostess families. Tupperware, Rubbermaid. Mini Reese's peanut butter cups, marshmallow Peeps. Good lord I want a Little Debbie oatmeal creme pie right now!
