I drink it but with slight disgust given that most of Zurich water is coming from the Zurich lake. I tried to research how it functions but could not fine more info. Given that there are many people swimming in Zurich lake I am not convinced it is a good idea to drink that water.. .

Re: Do you drink tap water?

In answer to the OP: Yes

In answer to Minimimi: I'd like to know more about the water cycle, specifically within the region of Zurich. You seem highly knowledgeable, so perhaps you could share more information. I've heard there are 2 networks of pipes in Zurich - fed from different water sources - is that correct?

The suction pipe is located more in the middle of lake Zurich, so only the germs from the most healthy swimmers will get sucked in. Healthy = good germs.

But I also do not want plastic water because of 1) its environmental effects, 2) possible bacteria and other stuff build up in them

As for the taste I like Lugano one, but I don't like Zurich and (especially) Lausanne area water. And there are definitely countries with better tasting tap water in my opinion.

Indeed, and even then, the "human germs" would be diluted at a ratio of around one per several million litres of water.

I tried to find more info but could not so not really knowledgeable

Actually I could not even find if there are parts of Zurich that use solely lake water and parts that use other resources (whatever they are, I hope springs ) because they say 70% comes from the lake...

Well they are still likely to get to someone unless they are doing something to prevent it (I guess Raperswill swimmer's germs are passing through middle as well I guess)

Luckily the water is flowing out of the lake which decreases the chances...

There is. The normal network, fed by lake, spring, and ground water, where all housholds are connected to. And a spring water only emergency network on which around 400 fountains are connected to.

More explanation in German and a list off all Spring Water Fountains in the City: https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/dib/de/...erbrunnen.html

By way of example, for food poisoning to occur, you need bacterial concentrations of around 100,000-100,000,000 cfu (colony-forming units)/g. With the dilution factor I mentioned before (actually, I way understated it), I think you'll be OK.

I think that's very dependent on the bacteria type. I believe for drinking water, 'safe' levels of E.Coli are <1 cfu/100 mL.

Not as much a risk in big lakes, but any water sources near to farm land---can get iffy.

Time to stop this

The technology employed in the Männedorf drinking water treatment plant on Lake Zurich makes it the most modern waterworks in Switzerland.

They do.

Do you really think that the water from the lake goes directly to your tap?
