New potatoes [Jersey Royals equivalent]

do they exist in Switzerland?

I have never seen them in my 5 and a half years here - only realised how much i missed them after a recent trip home

Re: New potatoes...

I have to be honest, I don't really know what "new" potatoes are ... are they just little "young" ones? If so, then no, the only potatoes that Migros and Co-op sell (in my experience) are mouldy 17 seconds after they leave the store.

Re: New potatoes...

I had to check what they look like in case I was mistaken, and yes, if you've never seen them, it's probably because my local migros buys the entire crop for switzerland, it seems to be the only potato they sell loose.

Little baby potatoes exist, but I don't think I've seen "proper"* new potatoes here either.

*The flaky ones that you "peel" with a nail brush.

if you have a balcony or garden you can grow your own (using a growbag if youre on a balcony) its not too late to plant now.

Re: New potatoes...

yep Jersey Royals are new potatoes they dont all have to come from jersey though and yep the ones that you scrub the skin off and not peel

Potatoes are rubbish here (probably my strongest criticism of Switzerland to date )

Re: New potatoes...

The three potato princesses all came home one day with their boyfriends to ask the potato king for permission to marry.

The first potato princess was with a King Edward - the king was pleased and the wedding went ahead.

The second potato princess was with a Jersey Royal - again the king approved and the wedding went ahead

The third potato princess was with John Motson - the king was outraged and had her banished from the kingdom. As she was packing in tears, the queen came to console her daughter and said

"you should really have seen it coming....

....he's only a commentator"

(word of warning - it is possible that you have to be northern and English to find this funny)

Re: New potatoes...

new potatoes are the first one's you dig up from the earth, (they still do grow in the earth don't they) therefore, new, fresh, lovely, juicy

and yes coop, or migros too I guess, sells those from Israel but go look around in the same shop and I bet ya you'll see Swiss ones. take those. the Israli one might turn you into a spy or something.

Now whether they're called something as posh as that I wouldn't know I didn't look, only whether they were Swiss, but I swear they looked just like that.
