Re: oatmeal

You can get good old Quaker Oats at the The American Market.

Re: oatmeal

Our local Coop and Migros both stock Oatmeal (Haferbrei in German, bouillie d'avoine in French).

Check by the breakfast cereals. I just bought some that was ground fairly fine (the Bio variety) but you can get the oats as flakes or just slightly ground.

Re: oatmeal

It's in every grocery store. In German, it's called Hafenflocken, and usually found near the cereals.

The weeny Coop down the road from us to the main one in town, plus an out of town one.

Ask one of the assistants at your local store.

Re: oatmeal

Here's what I don't get: last autumn, I suggested to my coworkers (all Swiss or German) that once it gets cold, I could make some nice hot oatmeal. (We always do breakfast together.)

They looked at me as though I'd suggested serving a heaping pile of steaming poop. "I only eat that if I'm sick", one said. Another said "ewww".

What's wrong with oatmeal? With some brown sugar (or substitute ) or maple syrup, maybe some dried fruit and cinnamon?

Re: oatmeal

I agree, it's really muesli that people tend to eat here. With yoghurt.
I do my own porridge, fry oats with a bit of honey, cinnamon, seeds, whatever comes handy. And then cook it with milk.

Have you got a microwave? if so, it is dead easy! porridge in a mug (not your face), hot water just cover the top of porridge - do not stir, microwave about 25sec high power. take it out, stir it. Pop it back in for another 25 sec (or until you can see it rinse to the top of the rim). Then it is done. stir in whatever you like to acompany it.

The trick is to use a big enough container and the porridge must have reached a certain temperature for at least 10 sec.
