| | Smoked Salmon
Hi,
I'm having trouble finding good dry, smoked salmon near Basel. I've found good lox -- what I hope to find is a thicker piece that can crumble. Any suggestions on where to look?
Thanks!

Thanks! | | | | | I recently had a whole box shipped to me from Alaska. Postage was $45.50 USD and the store labeled the value for $100. I ended up paying slightly less than CHF 40.- for duties on this. But all in all, still much much better than what I could otherwise get in Switzerland.
If you want really good quality salmon, order from Alaska . Can give you the information of the store I got mine from.

@ mimi1981: It looks similiar ... just wondering on the quality & price ratio. I've bought many packages of salmon from Migros & Coop but I've yet to find anything that's of the quality that will draw me back. I was hoping for a good fish market or smokehouse I haven't yet discovered?

@ standardgirl: Thanks! I'd appreciate a PM with that info. I'm still hoping for something local ~~ I like to support local businesses when I can But, coming from Seattle, I do miss great salmon! Le sigh ...

This is the store that I ordered from: http://www.salmonetc.com/. They ship worldwide, so just give them a call. They were very helpful. I was actually in Ketchikan, so had the opportunity to sample.
I paid $50 USD shipping for 24 cans of salmon (the actual postage on the package was $45.50). They were really heavy, so would expect smoked filet shipping to be cheaper. Shipping from the day I ordered until the day I received the package was about 1 week.

This is where we've ordered ours from for years now (we visited them back in 2005 and never eaten any other smoked salmon since then ).
From ordering to delivery takes around 4 - 5 working days, faster if you authorize DHL

Just an update: due to time constraints, I went with the Coop brand Mimi1981 linked to above. My assessment is that it is packed in a bit too much oil & is more expensive than I'm used to, but I liked it so much I've bought it two more times already! Yay! I love having salmon in my diet again! Thank you!

you're in Basel, just next to lovely French supermarkets that offer many, many different kinds of smoked salmon. A lot cheaper as well. Go check them out.

I'm going up north to the land of gravadlax soon so if anyone is truly in need of some, PM me sometime in the next week and I might be able to smuggle some back with me for you...along with all the decent bread and such that I'll be carrying. |

I would presume so.

I haven't looked specifically for salmon, but I'd suggest going across the border to Germany to go to an Edeka store. They have excellent selections of smoked fishes.
