Help me drink tap water please!

I don't like the taste (or rather lack thereof) of tap water here and I really want to drink more. I don't want to add syrups or fruits etc, I just want to drink plain old tap water. I am aware that there are some filtering devices that one can purchase that attach to the tap. Does anyone know if these change the taste of the water at all? Any tips on how I can overcome this silly aversion of mine

Re: Help me drink tap water please!

Umm, clean water has no taste.

If it has none now, what would expect to achieve by filtering?

Now, you could carbonate it, kits are readily available.

Ha! you are not alone, I can't stand water in any form. Get told off countless times for not drinking enough of it but I just can't drink the stuff.

No useful hint or tips from me other than to stay well away from it

Where we live the tap water tastes great, comes from a spring I'm told. Just a couple of kilometers away at my work the water is undrinkable, absolutely awful. Apparently comes from the lake and is treated. I run that through a Brita and it tastes fine . I'm told it's good to keep the Brita in the fridge as it can develop mold in the filter cartridge, but I don't and I haven't noticed any mold-ish smells or flavors.

Re: Help me drink tap water please!

Do you like fizzy water? If so then get a soda stream. Or buy bottled water and drink that. Try a few - they do actually have different tastes.

For me it's all about temperature. I can't drink water from the tap because it's just not cold enough. Put it in a jug in the fridge and then it's fine!

Re: Help me drink tap water please!

This isn't as silly as it sounds........ check to see if there have been recent renovations in your house.

For my place the bathroom tap has much better water out of the sink than there is in the kitchen.

I guess it's just the new plumbing. It otherwise doesn't make sense.

Water in Switzerland is typically 'hard' (high calcium and magnesium). Keep this in mind if you are searching for a filter.

Use a Brita filter and keep it in the fridge. Water tastes so much better when cold.

If you don't like it, you don't like it, and that's the end of it.

I used to thoroughly dislike the chlorine flavoured liquid that came through my taps in England, but loved the chalky stuff that I got in my flat in Maennedorf. The water round here is just meh, really: neither good nor bad, merely drinkable.

If you really want to make yourself drink your tapwater, despite not really liking it, you can add a squirt of lemon juice. Not enough to add sugar and calories, but enough to add a bit of something elseness to the water, in order to make it less bland.

Good luck!

Our water is definitely from the lake. Thanks for the mold tips.

Ok, a couple of suggestion, thoughts. What about a splash of fresh fruit juice, or a couple of slices of fresh fruit?

To be honest I was told that in hot weather you should have a warm drink as it brings your body temperature up. Not sure if thats an old wives tale or fact but is my excuse for making endless cups of tea.

Re: Help me drink tap water please!

I have a filter pitcher, it makes the water have less taste, so if you're complaint is about how plain water is, filtering it won't help.

For me, having the water cooled (or even chilled) helps lots, although I don't need it "ice cold" it does taste better chilled a bit.

I've seen some clay water dispensers before, the clay helps keep the water cool without needing to actually chill it, I'm not sure where you may find one here though.

My other thought about this is that maybe it will have some psychological effect, getting the water from a clay pot or so rather than right from the tap may set your mind to thinking it is more than just plain water.

Re: Help me drink tap water please!

I don't have the "habit" of drinking water. I mean I do, but not in regular intervals. So I shug a 4x .5 liters throughout the day.

Valser without gas works for me.

...and let it run for a while. The water that comes first from the tap sat in plastic tubes (probably) and tastes like that. Letting it run for a while makes it cooler and it tastes better!

Re: Help me drink tap water please!

try living in london for a little while and drinking tap water there. once you've got used to it, come back and drink the tap water here. i think you'll find that the taste will have improved substantially!

as above, make sure the water is cold - colder = less taste.

also, just drink it. it's just a matter of getting used to it.
