Side dish fail

OK, so I'm an adventurous eater. I have three kinds of fish sauce in my pantry, countless hot sauces, my homemade kimchi (two kinds!) in the fridge, and I don't mind if my dinner is looking at me.

But a week ago I met my match.

And it was a plant.

Rice.

Rice.

Yeah. I was at an ethnic store, which I will leave anonymous to protect the accused, and I saw some rice I'd never seen before. Cute little white pearls. I bought it.

At home, I proceeded to cook it, as I might do any rice. (It's otherwise my favorite starch. If I believed in reincarnation, I would be forced to assume I'd been Asian in a prior life.)

And then my kitchen began to stink.

I thought I'd knocked over the garbage bag, or perhaps had an unnoticed gaseous emission from the hindquarters. But no.

It was the rice.

It filled my kitchen with the smell of severe halitosis.

A quick google search for the name — samba rice — revealed that it's a Sri Lankan rice known for its, um, distinctive aroma.

I tasted a bite of the rice, and with a pinched-shut nose, it actually tasted OK. It still ended up in the trash, because neither I nor my visiting friend could get past the smell.

Anyone want a nearly full kilo of uncooked stinky rice?

WIMP!

Bet you don't like Durian, either (our personal favorite for making ice-cream)!

WIMP!

Tom

P.S. Send me the rice!

I've never had a chance to try durian, though I must say that a fruit described as smelling of rotten onions isn't exactly high up on my list of foods I need to eat before I die. But if it were in front of me, I'd try it!

OK, next time you're in Zurich, I'll bring you the rice!

Alas, I have, and still have two nicely expanded cans in my fridge!

However, I prefer Norwegian RakFisk. (have some of that as well, not sure how old)

Don't think the durian ice-cream will last until ZH, you'll have to come to Ticino!

Also, it doesn't REMOTELY smell like rotting onions, it has it's OWN aroma!

Now, Surstroemming or durian, that IS a true dilemma (as most people don't understand what a dilemma is).

No, and by all descriptions of it, I'd like to keep it that way.

Re: Side dish fail

Holy f••king hell.

So a friend of a friend's dad was in Sweden recently. And, on request, he brought a can of Oskars Surströmming.

And last night, they decided to open it.

I can't imagine what would possess anyone to eat this. I have a strong stomach. I can smell all kinds of things without it bothering me (fish sauce, feces, whatever). But this, this took my breath away. It almost made ME vomit.

I would literally rather smell sewage than this. The thought of eating lunch while perched inside a garbage truck that's been sitting in July sun for a month is vastly more attractive than being within 100 feet of a can of surströmming.

Anyway, because the participants in this were all drunk, it ended up in an hour of manly competition to see who could vomit the most times. (It ended in a stalemate.) I remained an impartial observer. My friend, who is from the Philippines and is more accustomed to fermented fishes, was the only one who could actually eat it. I think he had two of them, and he didn't vomit.

He did, however, have to sleep in another room, away from his wife.

If I never see another can of this in my life, I'll die a happy man.

I think there is some rule of thumb (or possibly law) that says you can only open it / eat it outdoors.

That stands to reason, unless for some reason you want your house to smell like a landfill that's next to a swamp where a big fish kill just occurred.

I find "rotten onions" to not describe Durian at all. I absolutely hate the smell, I literally feel sick when I smell it... but the taste is ok: Extremly complex fruit aromas and a very weird texture - the fruits is "creamy" and always has something of "vanilla pudding blended with loads of exotic fruits". The smell still totally puts me off and if it was not the smell it would be the price - the stuff is expensive if you want a good one. Really expensive as in "you could have a nice meal in a restaurant instead of buying this one fruit".
