| | Where can I find swede (the vegetable)?
Hi All
I've been here for 2 years now and have never seen swede for sale in any supermarkets I've been in. Does anyone know if you can buy it here?
Thanks!

To the OP, I think they are not something that is common - seems to be thought of as old fashioned?

If this is what you are referring to, they always seem to have them at the bigger Coops, at least over on this side of the country. http://www.hub-uk.com/vegetables/swede.htm |

Thanks,
I heard that they sometimes carve them around halloween but don't really eat them. Also heard about using them for cattle feed I just hoped I could buy some somewhere!
It's a shame because it's delicious in stews and casseroles!

Yes that's it! Unfortunately a bit far away from me though!

Awesome... I used Google Translate to find out what a Swede is and got this:
Swede = sueco (as in the man with Swedish nationality)
Is that a kind of turnip? From the picture here it really looks like a turnip... |

Yup, it's a Turnip, also known as a Neap.
Haggis, Neaps & Tatties anyone?

I saw it for sale on the COOP in Hinwil. Not always available though.

Hi we too love this veggie but very rarely come across it here, I have twice bought it at Sat veg markets once in Basel by the Rathaus and once in Luzern by the Chapel Bridge. Just pure luck! Happy Turnip Hunting! |

They sell them in most coops at least they do in Zurich.... They look a little different here... A bit more knobbley but they taste pretty much the same.
Will be buying a few myself for winter soup making! Have a look of source the german word for them and just ask in the supermarket!
Hope you find them!

Yes that's it! Unfortunately a bit far away from me though! | | | | | Pretty sure I see them here in Basel too, although I don't often get them. But we do much of our chopping in France, where they're relatively common.
As opposed to parsnips, which have only started to become available in a couple of the (French) supermarkets in the last few years, and then usually only in the winter months. They're actually more common here in CH, but still not always available, which is a shame as they're in the very small subclass of vegetables that I actively like :-}

They sometimes have them on Migros online store Le Shop (leshop.ch), under the centuries old name "Vegetables of Yore" found in the "fruit & Veggies section.
The stock is changeable though and it doesn't look like they have any in at the moment |

For those of you in the francophone part of Swiss, or close to France, this legume is called: "panet". Roast parsnips with the roast beef - the very thought makes my mouth water.
