And I have heard from some chef TV programs that you never make a Salad Nicoise with fresh tuna but only tin tuna.
The simple tuna in olive oil drained and mixed with anchoives and mayo on bread or toast is great...salt and pepper.

I got some red food colouring in Coop hoping to make a red dinosaur for my son's birthday. It didn't work at all and made the icing pink

Ummm, red food coloring ALWAYS makes pink icing (here or anywhere else).

all colours were rubbish. The yellow was lighter than buttercream. Back home the colouring is much darker and worked a lot better than here. Coop must think that it wasn't living up to its expectations too and has stopped seling it.

Migros tubs of lovely-looking fresh fruit Bircher Muesli - why of why, do they put sugar in it, it's full of fresh fruit no need to ruin the flavour
I'd simplify that and say simply: Bircher Muesli - WHY?

I'm pretty sure Crumbs has food coloring paste on her website. The pastes work much better at making intense colors.

Actually, since I don't use food dyes, I have the same gripe with essences, like rhum, almond or butter scotch flavors here. The Oetkers are ok, the Migros are so synthetic tasting it ruins the dessert..Not sure why baking is so weird here, the cakes you buy manufactured at Migros are plastic, or people just do not bake the pretty cakey stuff at home (apart from some simple tarts, angel cake or strudels), but what one can buy in terms of a tad more sophisticated dessert making in your regular chains is bad. Same goes for cake decoration thingies, the pretty bits, in order to be edible and not always recycled smarties, I make my own with marzipan (bought Migros ones and almost had bunch of party kids breaking their teeth on pretty looking, plastic tasting stone hard sugar beads and trinkets). I guess it does come from palate immune tradition of eating for nutrition, but still...I get my stuff abroad, mostly. Real vanilla essences, spices with zero chemicals, etc.

Agree 100%! My neighbours and Swiss friends do bake and their strudels and marble cakes etc are truly delicious but not very varied and not, as you say, "pretty cakey stuff". But actually I rather like it that way as it means I can whip up a simple cake like a Victoria sponge in 20 mins, fill it with homemade jam and whipped cream and then my Swiss friends and neighbours fall about with admiration ... So Never Let Them Know How Easy It Could Be ..ok?

Yes, tinned tuna can be good quality - flaky, tender....depending on what you buy.
But this 'stuff' from Rio Mare had me speechless - a rare occurrence.

Re: Products which don't deliver...

Other than birthday cakes, I don't do "pretty" when I bake.

And while the industrial stuff is what it is, Manor bakes on premises and does some nice stuff, and the local pasticcerie around here are great!

I tend to disagree, actually, since I still remember the choice of pastries and at home and elsewhere, cupcakes, muffins, you name it. Here, you get your boring 6 things, everywhere the same. Same dough, same sablé, same croissants with super sweet almond paste.

The resto in Manor does bake, but the cakes are incredibly...just plain and super sweet, zero sophistication, palate and eye pleasing. Actually, very resembling old commie school cafet stuff.

I am not really bothered, since it's really irrelevant to my life, I bake and since family does not eat my marvels, they are not big sweet stuff folks, i score high points at creche, playgroups, work and neighbors. But still think that for the bucks people pay here, they could actually have some baker doing something more interesting and nice.

The picture on the package was absolutely nothing like it!!!

That's because the food industry have professional food photographers, the food you see in the picture was colored, sprayed, arranged, supplemented. And if you look closely at the picture it should say "Serviervorschlag" which means something like we suggest you serve it that way, it does not show the actual contents of the can.

I agree. There's nothing to get fat on here, and which would not cost you an arm and a leg.
Cakes at Globus are nice, though.

Oh god, this is so true. Curry has transformed into some bland tasting ragu, with raisins, pineapple, cream, a hint of curry spice and a lot of turmeric, instead. Though, don't we all make our own, mean and awesome curry? I bet my shoes we all do. Nothing better than a potluck.

I have to curb a tad my pastry bashing of late, just had a rumball, and it delivered.

As always.

Redbull does not deliver. The commercials are nice, the drink, ugh..

Re: Products which don't deliver...

I was actually taught to make "Swiss" curry at school and, having an Indian-Malaysian stepfather who cooks well enough to offer food catering, I was a little surprised when it all started with a sauce bechamel and some sort of mild tasting yellow powder. However, once the chicken was added and it all came on top of fluffy rice, I did actually like it. It's not "curry" but it's nice if you weren't expecting something else in the first place. Just please, please leave out the pineapple and raisins, that's just wrong.

One thing I was very underwhelmed by - Oreo biscuits, what is the hype about those things? Same thing with Hershey chocolates, it's just sickeningly sweet diabetes in a wrapper!

Re: Products which don't deliver...

Heisse Maroni.

I grew up singing 'Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...', although such exotic delights were unavailable in my corner of Suburbia. I had imagined that roasted chestnuts would have a crisp, rich, and well... nutty sort of taste.

I arrived in Switzerland in December, and was thrilled to find a Maroni vendor while taking my first walk down Bahnhofstrasse. The smell was heavenly, just as I had imagined. I could hear Nat King Cole singing in my head...

But the taste! Mushy, sort of an indescript warm... blandness.

Nothing wrong with Maroni, but the reality was just so very different than my imagination.

Re: Products which don't deliver...

They do vary from stand to stand. The ones in what I regard as touristic areas (i.e. near train stations) tend to be the least value. In Zürich, the one near Albisriedenplatz is quite nice - they put cabbage leaves in with the charcoal which keeps the chestnuts nice and moist; and I have had no rotten ones from them.

Cheers,
Nick
