Re: French fries

I never ate french fries in Brussels but I would recommend Sternen Grill at Bellevue in Zürich. You can have them with the very popular mustard for which Sternen Grill is known or just with ketchup. I am not a big fries eater but I like them best there.

Re: French fries

Another misnomer - the fries ( pommes frites ) were from Belgium, hence original:

Culinary origin

Belgian journalist Jo Gérard has claimed that a family manuscript dated 1781 recounts that potatoes were fried prior to 1680 in what was then the Spanish Netherlands (present-day Belgium), in the Meuse valley: "The inhabitants of Namur, Andenne, had the custom of fishing in the Meuse for small fish and frying, especially among the poor, but when the river was frozen and fishing became hazardous, they cut potatoes in the form of small fish and put them in a fryer like those here...

Some Belgians believe that the term "French" was introduced when American soldiers arrived in Belgium during World War I, and consequently tasted Belgian fries. They supposedly called them "French", as it was the official language of the Belgian Army at that time...

So they are not Belgian at all. They are Spanish. Either way, fries in Belgium are wicked good! Love.

But correct me if I'm wrong, isn't the proper way to eat them with mayonnaise? Or is that just Dutch (I guess it's called friet saus).
Not really. There is a plethora of different sauces to choose from.

Just buy a jar of mayonaise and most frozen oven bake chips will take you back to Brussels.

You mean the double fried in cow fat (graisse de bœuf)? Nowhere in this country.

They do that in northeast China as well, although it's more fried potato wedges than fries.
