Re: Looking for kale (the vegetable)

I bought kale ("federkohl") a few weeks ago at the grocery store in Jelmoli, on Zurich's Bahnhofstrasse. But then I also just saw it in the MMM Migros in Uster.

I was quite surprised when, a month or so ago, I was at a Saturday farmer's market, and I asked two vegetable/fruit stands if they had any federkohl or gruenkohl, and none of them knew what I was talking about. They'd never heard of it before.

Re: Looking for kale (the vegetable)

Plenty of kale (Federkohl) at Migros (Affoltern, Oerlikon, and even Baden). Just in time to forget about the weather when tucking in in some warm Boerenkool stamppot

Re: Looking for kale (the vegetable)

I love Kale, I've only seen it once in Migros and three weeks later they didn't have it anymore. I believe like alot of the fresh veg here it is seasonal so when you see it buy it in bulk and freeze it.

Re: Looking for kale (the vegetable)

How do you freeze it? Just put it in bags or do you cook it first? I have a garden full of kale and I don't know what to do with it before it gets too cold.

Re: Looking for kale (the vegetable)

If you are in Basel check out green market in Lorrach [DE]. Tue, Thu and Sat. That's where I get my Kale. A bunch [you pick how many leaves you want] of six / seven big leaves costs 50 cents. So, get pedalling ...

Hey Amanda,

After washing and drying, I chop it up and freeze it. When a recipe calls for it, I simply thaw it and throw it in.

I don't cook it beforehand.

Re: Looking for kale (the vegetable)

FYI, Coop now has imported kale for 2.50 a bag. It's not organic, so it's not full of bugs.

Re: Looking for kale (the vegetable)

Certain Coops are starting to sell Kale - it is located with their BIO vegetables. Jelmoli in Zurich always has kale so perhaps check the one in Basel.

I saw kale at Manor in Baden, but it smelled like mildew, so I didn't buy it.

Re: Looking for kale (the vegetable)

I couldn't get any kale before Christmas but the past month I've been seeing it in loads of places - larger Coops, Migros, market in HB on a Wednesday, reformhaus and Jemoli

Put it in freezer bags raw, kale likes the cold and it makes it taste sweeter

Does anyone know where I could find this in Basel - or in any nearby locations?

I believe in German it is called grünkohl, and in French it is chou fris.

Thanks very much for any assistance!
just try at Globus in basel

Re: Looking for kale (the vegetable)

Migros is carrying it regularly now, but it is always wilted. The Viadukt, as mentioned has it at about half the price, and always fresh--I get it there every week.

Re: Looking for kale (the vegetable)

I saw some at the Farmers Market by the Milchbuch Coop. It's on Tuesdays and Fridays until 11 AM. Kind of hard to get to if you work, but if you really need your Kale, you can take the morning off work!
