Hello fellow Indians,

I'm looking to move to Dubendorf next week for a year or so
Please suggest some places around this area where I can shop for Indian food stuffs
Also, will this be expensive?
Should I stock up as much as possible to take with me?

Thanks in advance
Dübendorf is one of the closest suburbs to Zürich (in London, that would still be considered city centre..) so you'll probably go shopping in Zürich itself for anything more special than generic spices you can buy in any supermarket.

For fresh products, local Turkish supermarkets usually have by far the best deals (say, Tomatoes at 1 CHF/kg, when other supermarkets want 4 CHF..) and they're found more frequent across all of Zurich.

If you're coming here for a temporary time, bringing some spices/long durable products will probably be a good idea. Swiss prices are high, and imported products cost quite a lot (and usually aren't even cheaper if you go for Germany - Asia stores there aren't really cheaper in comparison)

For me, I travel frequently to Asia and usually stock up on spices and products there and bring them with me. Especially in bigger amounts (say, 10kg), the savings can be quiet significant. Bring "small and expensive" with you, and buy "big and cheap" (like rice, noodles, etc.) here.

There is a Japanese grocery store near Yoojis in Zurich. There is also an Indian one in Adliswil.

Re: Ethnic Grocery Stores

Finally got to benefit from some items via El Maiz, really fantastic. Their blue chips are outstanding and actually made en Suisse

Highly recommend their flour tortillas & chiles as well

Does anyone know a store with mustard oil (suitable for cooking)?
Thx
I found 2 varieties in Barkat BUT both were for external use only. I bought the one from an U.K. brand and it smelled so vile, I throw away the entire bottle right after opening. Then I bought the other brand TRS, the mustard oil is made in Bangladesh and it also said 'only for external use'. It's decent, not spectacular and definitely doesn't have the pungency of the best mustard oil. Nonetheless, I use it for cooking and sometimes raw and have had no ill effects even after repeated use. There might be a EU rule against marking mustard oil as edible oil.

You can try searching at Indian grocery stores for the mustard seed oil. Try the Indian store on Kernstrasse called Agarawal, I believe they have food grade mustard oil there. I don't trust the ones from Barkat for cooking.

Mustard oil has a higher than 5% Erucic acid content because of which in EU, USA and Canada, mustard oil must always be marked "not for consumption"/"external use only". So, don't go hunting for mustard oil which are marked food grade. Either they are mislabeling in violation of EU/Swiss law or it has been filtered in a way which takes away its essential qualities (if at all possible).
