KFC in Switzerland?

Hi everyone!

Is there a KFC in Zurich? I'm going to have a few visitors who are big KFC fans (and I must admit I enjoy it every now and again despite not being at all into fast food). I tried to have a look around but ended up with nothing (which might very well indicate that there are no KFC around ;-)

Cheers

Re: KFC in Zurich

As far as I know Switzerland is "sans Colonel". Thank goodness, apart from the health implications it would probably cost 5chf just for a wing. And I just put on 2kg only thinking about a 5 piece box.

Re: KFC in Zurich

I must admit that from time to time I have yearned for a tower burger from KFC. Sad I know, but it won't be happening for me anytime soon in CH - that's for sure!

Don't complain to a Swiss about the lack of KFC, you'll only get a lecture about how nobody wants to have one, and shame on you for wanting one

Re: KFC in Zurich

KFC (I'm old school; I still call it kentucky Fried Chicken) is the ONLY thing I miss about England. Sad, but 100% true. My wife was even considering taking me to Germany for my birthday, just to get some finger lickin' goodness.

Re: KFC in Zurich

Absolutely correct there are none in CH. There was one in Geneva - I went there for the experience but it closed a couple of years ago citing difference of opinion with the authorities. Whatever that was supposed to mean!

How am I going to live without my regular helping of grease?! Maybe I won't come after all.

Don't worry, there is plenty of artery-clogging food here, just in a wider and tastier variety.

Re: KFC in Zurich

I sometimes take a trip down to Geneva from Brugg (2.45) - with my GA it is free- this is virtually the same as KFC. (ask my son).
Fried Chicken - bd du Pont-d'Arve 28 - 1205 Genève. About 8 minutes from the Gare Central - Get tram number 13 to Pont D'Arve. It is hidden in a very small arcade shopping centre.

Re: KFC in Geneva

Went down to Geneva yesterday to get KFC lookalike for supper - my wife wanted it for her mothers day meal. I took 2 large plastic tupperware type boxes in my backpack. I really enjoy reading my book on the train, so the travelling was not a problem.
A word of advice is - do not bother bringing back the Pomme Frites - they do not travel well. You are better cooking some frozen chips when you get home.
The chicken travels fine - 15 minutes in a pre warmed cooker or pop it in the microwave. Better if you tell the guy behind the counter (he speaks english) that you just want x portions of chicken. This is not on the menu board. I paid 31chf for 8 big pieces of breast. (8 piece meal with 4 portions of inedible pommes frites would have been 42chf).
For those of you who like the KFC's chicken sauce/gravy - they do sell this, but it is mixed with the "puree" - which is the mashed potatoes they sell in non UK KFC's. Again, if you ask the nice guy, he will give you a chicken sauce - moins pomme de terre.
It is not colonel saunders, but it is as good as you will get. In fact, I think the chicken is a little better, because the Chic Chicken restaurant is out of the way and they have more time to cook it properly.
Be interested if anyone has been there - it is almost impossible to find on google - perhaps KFC keep it underground.
Someone told me that there used to be a KFC next to Staufacherstr. tram stop over 9 years ago, but that it was shut down due to bad press and swiss gastronomic rejection. (I also heard that Mc Donalds paid for them to be kicked out of switzerland). All rumours.

JBrady, I thought you were kidding in your original post about travelling to Geneva, until I saw this progress report!

I commend your dedication - Brugg to Geneva and back for a bucket of chicken!!

KFC in Geneva

Hi Batholemew - it is nothing really, I travel about 16-18 hours per week to and from work as it is, so it is not that much longer than my daily commute. It is actually cheaper than sitting in a bar and the scenery is nicer. (and you never know who will meet). By the way, my wife and I go to Luxembourg for an Indian - maybe 3 times a year - this is just over 4 hours, but worth it (have you found a half decent one here? Never mind the price.) Believe me, if you make the sacrifice, it tastes much much better. I like my food

I assume your "swiss gastronomic rejection" was an oxymoron. It seems the only gourmet cuisine that I've ever eaten in Switzerland is imported from another country. With the amount of pork and other fat containing products eaten daily in Switzerland concerns of a fast food chain like KFC to the overall health of the population or damage to the culinary arts in Switzerland should be of marginal risk.

Even the famous Swiss Fondue is laden with transfats and 4% butterfats from the milk used in the production of the Gruyere and Ementhaler cheese which translates to something more on the order of 70-80% fat content after you allow for the total reduction in product weight after processing and curing. After all how many grams of fat are in the whey?

I'm all for allowing any entity to exist that can do so on its own merits, and not be at the mercy of a group that has ulterior motives such as a culinary group with their own self serving agenda.

The Chic Chicken used to be a KFC until about two years ago if memory serves.

Nandos in Zurich

Funny you mention Nandos - I have got 36 assorted bottles of Nandos sauce and have bought 2 gas grills and I am in middle of buying a mobile van to sell something similar in CH (probably aargau). Been on my list of projects for a couple of years. Anyone else interested in joining the venture? Next step is trying to find an ideal place to sell it and suss out the Gemeinde permits.

I would have loved to have seen that, i was in London last week and ordered hot (comparing it to South Africa where Nandos originates) and boy was that stuff hot. Was quite surprised that Londoners enjoy it.

I used to frequent Nados on Clapham High Street at least once a week .... Piri Piri chicken ....
Nandos in South London do things hotter, as that it suits the taste buds of West Indian palates. (non-racist comment btw)
