Crumpets! Pref in Zürich...

Hi All,

I was back in England last weekend and was asked to bring back some crumpets, which I forgot to do.

I have been reading the thread about trying to get hold of English muffins over here, and the lack of muffins here doesn't exactly fill me with confidence about being able to get hold of crumpets anywhere, but if anyone can help me I'm sure this forum can.

As the title says, does anyone know where I can get hold of good old English (or equivalent) crumpets? I am based in Zürich, so anywhere nearby would be most convenient, but happy to order from elsewhere.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Martin

Re: Crumpets! Pref in Zürich...

I've had absolutely no luck finding crumpets near Basel and they are the thing I miss the most. Luckily some friends have been kind enough to bring some back from the UK for me recently so the cravings are not too bad at the moment I too would love to know if anyone has found them in Switzerland.

I also have never managed to find crumpets in Switzerland, so would love to know if anyone finds them
Eventually, out of desperation, i found a recipe and made my own! A lot of effort and not half as easy as getting them out of the packet and shoving them in the toaster!

Ah, the problems of finding a decent bit of crumpet in Switzerland

Have you tried looking downstairs in either Jelmoli or Globus? I'm sure we found some there ages ago. Or you could try the BritShop - he's just updated his supply, according to his earlier posts.

Re: Crumpets! Pref in Zürich...

Good luck in your search for crumpets. Lat time I was in Siansburys I noticed they now sell square ones- what is the world coming to?

Off topic, but what on earth is an "English Muffin"? Certainly nothing I ever heard of in England, but often in America, where the term appears to define a sort of bun like thing. Don't get me wrong, they are delicous toasted with jam, but it seems to me that, whatever they are, they have been incorrectly labelled (not that I could care less to be honest.)

Re: Crumpets! Pref in Zürich...

An english muffin is a savoury breakfast foodstuff, known in england simply as a muffin. Americans bake small cakes and call them muffins - I was going to say fairy cakes but I think they are classed as mini muffins in the states.

I like "english muffins" best when they americanised a la the sausage and egg mcmuffin.

I prefer crumpets at home

I answered a similar point in one of the other threads barely an hour ago, saying what a bummer it was to have a preference for curvaceous women when one lives in a town that only has one shape of woman, i.e. stick insect. Or maybe that is wilful misinterpretation of your own wilful misinterpretation!

I logged straight onto britshop (fortunately the URL that I guessed worked...), but neither crumpets nor muffins were listed anywhere in the product listings. So I took the website at its word and suggested a new product. Two in fact...

Jelmoli and Globus I will try tomorrow after work: thanks for the tip!

And Jelmoli is especially appealing as thanks to a tip from AbFab a few months ago I now have one of their spangly Visa cards that earns me more bonus points there (of what benefits that may bring I am not quite sure!) than anywhere else...

Re: Crumpets! Pref in Zürich...

Hi,

Crumpets are relatively easy to make at home. Here is the recipe I use:

8 oz (225 g) strong plain flour (CH: Halbweiss or Hellesurdinkel work)
1 level teaspoon salt
1 level tablespoon dried yeast
1 level teaspoon caster sugar
½ pint (275 ml) milk

Sieve the flour into a mixing bowl. Mix in the salt, sugar and dried yeast.

Heat the milk gently until it is lukewarm.

Make a well in the flour mix and whisk in the milk a bit at a time, make sure you get rid of any lumps. An electric whisk might be an idea.

Cover the bowl with a teatowel and leave in a warm place for about 45 minutes for the batter to rise - it will double in size.

For cooking, -I have some "rösti rings" I bought ages ago, otherwise round cookie cutters or egg rings will work. Make sure you grease them on the inside with plenty of butter.

Place the rings in a heavy frying pan on a medium heat. When they are hot, spoon in about a tablespoon of batter to each ring. Let cook for 4-5 mins until bubbles appear on the top surface of the batter. Then remove the rings and flip the crumpets over to cook the topside.

Place the cooked crumpets in a warm oven to stop them cooling.

Each time you cook a batch, make sure you grease the rings and they and the pan are hot enough.

Cheers,
Nick
