Japanese and Korean ingredients

Most of the asian markets here sell goods from Southeast Asia. But there is a different style of asian cooking to the north in Japan and Korea. I'd like to find some ingredients to round out and authenticate some Japanese and Korean meals I prepare.

So far, I have seen some foodstuff at Globus, but it is quite overpriced and not exactly what I want. I've also been to Nishi, a little japanese store in Zurich run by a nice japanese lady. She has great stuff, but I wish she had a wider range collection.

Some of the things I am looking for are, from the top of my head:
-Soba Tsuyu for Zaru Soba
-Tarako or Mentake for Spaghetti
-Kochijang from Korea
-Various soju or sake
-Finally, Sushi grade fish!

I would even consider driving to Germany or ordering through mail order for some of these. Surely there must be some culinary experts amongst us that can offer a tip on where to look.

May non-experts reply? Call Ginger or Yooji's on Seefeldstrasse (ZH). Ginger is a super little Japanese restaurant and I'm sure they'd be happy to reveal their sources/sauces. Yooji's has a small shop next to the restaurant, maybe you could pick up what you need there?

And if you need an Uncle at the table...

Then that makes you a culinary expert. Thanks! I'll give them a try, though I wonder why they would simply divulge their sources. I've also heard of two places that sell Sushi grade fish. One around Langstrasse and another in Rapperswil. Any such rumours would be hotly pursued.

There's info on Nishi's Japan Shop on

Might help. Stuff from Globus/Jelmoli can be rather expensive.

I think this is what your looking for in Geneva. I used to turn up and just wander around the shop, they sell such interesting ingredients imported from Japan.

Re: Japanese and Korean ingredients

Hi,

There is a Korean shop and take away at Schützengasse, first street off Bahnhofstrasse to the left coming from the Zurich Main Station. There you will find Korean Kochujang and other Korean and Japanese foodstuff. You can also taste some typical Korean Food, such as Kimchi.

Good luck.
