Re: Burger in Zurich

I ate at The Bite in kreis 4 over the weekend and was blown away.

Best burger I've had in Zurich hands down. (And I'm no stranger to Holy Cow, Iroquois etc.)

It probably helps that the chef is american and the owners are canadian-swiss.

It's more upscale than Holy Cow while also being more lively.

I intend to visit many more times in the future.

Re: Burger in Zurich

So last night, we went to The Bite. I can confirm that it is a very good burger. I had the "Manchego", which comes with, yep, manchego cheese and charred spring onions.

Also, the wings are very good and don't forget to order the Animal Fries, which are fries überbacken with thousand island dressing, cheddar and shallots.

Dessert of chocolate brownie was also very competent (we shared one for the table) and you have to give bonus points to any place that makes its own ketchup.

Will be back.

Hmmm, animal fries. Ripping off in'n'out burger. Oh well, all the Swiss do is copy the Americans (and charge 10 times as much for inferior products), so not a surprise.

Thanks for the tip and the review. Always great to find somewhere new.

However....... the "Hattrick" burger at 41chf maybe a little outside the OP's price range

Wow.. haha.
Clearly I'm not a 400 pound french fry eating American. However, in the city where I live currently there are gourmet burgers everywhere and priced around 4.50$

That's one of my favourite places, leagues ahead of McDOnalds and Burger King for around 30% more money.

30% more but I didn't find it expensive (maybe because I wasn't the one who took the bill) but the location is good and staff is nice and relaxed. That's important. I never go back if the waiters are cold, distant and can't be bothered to smile but yes I know, it can be hard to find in Switzerland Heidi & Tell is also very easy to find, just off the Enge train station.

Re: Burger in Zurich

Here's another thought. It sounds strange, but Desperados actually has one of the better burgers in town.... just ignore the fact that they're trying to specialize in Mexican food.

But a burger and a margarita, that's not a easy combination in Zurich!

An article on The Bite in this morning's Tagesanzeiger (in German). Pretty good review, 3.5/5 stars.

Woah!!! Nice one.

I tried the 1lb cheese burger at the Lion Pub a while back. Cost 40CHF and was huge! Served with fries and coleslaw. Half way through I realized something would have to give, so I stopped eating the bun and focused on the meat.

After the posts here, I'm dying to try out The Bite.

Re: Burger in Zurich

I went to Hedi & Tell tonight ( http://www.heiditell.com).

Pretty disappointed. I didn't expect that it was a little like a Mac Donald fast food concept, a little more upscale.
The meat was cold and I have to say that the taste was average. The fries were not bad. But the "service" was pretty bad.
They refused to give me a glass of water despite the fact that I bought a drink.

Then the orders 30 & 31 were "called", meaning appeared on an electronic board, for like more than 5 minutes.
One guy (a client) came to us and asked if we had orders 30 & 31 - we had already eaten. After a couple of minutes, I went from table to table and asked and found the people. From their table you couldn't see the board!!!

The waitress didn’t bother to try to do what I did to find the people ...

I guess for this price (9.90 the hamburger w/o fries) you can't expect much ...

Next on my list: Korner and The Bite (which was closed today)

Re: Burger in Zurich

While I find the execution at The Bite to be flawless, I think their burgers are over-engineered. I am just not big on burgers with weird things on them, yet every burger place here seems to want to invent "creative" burger creations. That's fine and dandy, but I just want a perfectly-executed bacon cheeseburger (cheddar) with lettuce, tomato, raw onion, and pickles (salty dill pickles, not vinegar gherkins). To that I add a bit of mayo, onion, and pepper. That's it.

At the Bite, I like their classic burger. The beef flavor comes through best in that, without being masked by crazy s--t.

Kennedy's (the pub on Europaallee) does really nice burgers, as long as you ask for them med-rare.

The Fork and Bottle generally does superb burgers, but last time, they wildly overcooked it despite my request for med-rare.

Finally, St. Joseph's pub (behind Quellenstrasse) does a very good burger, too -- I just ask for it without the sweet curry-flavored house sauce.

Avoid Hooters, Paddy Reilly's and Oliver Twist. They all use icky pre-formed beef patties. I especially hate the Swiss-style patties that taste like sausage because they're oversalted, ground much too fine, and compressed to hockey pucks. (If memory serves me, the latter two use those, as do practically all Swiss restaurants.)
