Neuchatel area - recommendations?

We are an Irish family doing a home exchange with a family from Neuchatel in July - August, we would like recommendations for any of the following (our kids are 10 and 6). We plan to visit Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, Basel and Zurich at least, plus lots of day-trips to the countryside. We would like recommendations for any of the following: child-friendly restaurants, economical food shopping (is is worth crossing the border to France?).
Merci vielmal.

No need for the vielmal - we speak FRENCH here, lol. Where abouts will you be? I'd say not worth driving to France unless you want to visit something there and then you can Dinozoo parc between Pontarlier and Besançon. The Chateau de Joux near the border could be fun too. Or go to Buttes to take the chairlift up to the Robella restaurant, and go back down on the big wheeled scooter, and have a go at the big toboggan.

Difficult to advise without knowing which part of the Canton you will be in.

Thanks for the quick reply. We will be in the town of Neuchatel itself, but are swapping cars as well as houses, so we will be able to travel just about anywhere. Merci Bien!

There is a big new Aldi in Peseux. If you go to Pontarlier do get in touch and pop in for a drink. We live in an old house in the mountains on the way. Or if you come to Buttes.

Re: Neuchatel area - recommendations?

Hello from Neuch,

I am Irish and have lived for over 10 years in Neuchatel (a bit outside in the valley - Val du Ruz).
I have 2 kids boy 7 and girl 11.

There are lots of interesting places to go in the area.

here is the tourist office in Neuchatel : http://www.neuchateltourisme.ch/en/home.html

in the hill walking mountain sector there is the crux de van and le gorges de l'aruse

on bikes you can ride around the lake in 3 hours

http://www.neuchateltourisme.ch/en/l...hatel.931.html

you can go on a boat trip on the lake in neuchatel or indeed there is a more dramatic boat trip in france on the Doubs to the saut des Doubs.

Bern is a 40 minute drive away and has lots of intresting things it is also intresting to see the contast between the german style city (Bern) and neuchatel.

here is the link for the tourist office in Bern
http://www.bern.com/en/index.cfm

I am on holiday last 2 weeks in July and first week of august, kids go back to school on 20th of august here.

However if you are around outside these dates send me a private mail and we can meet up.

Regards

John

Thanks so much for this information. This is a great forum! The only difficulty I am having is I cannot see how to use the "thank you" facility.
