Caliente Festival..

Hi All,

I just would like to know if someone was already at the Caliente Festival before? I've just moved in, but I heard the food is very good, and as a Brazilian, I would love to know if it is worth or not..

Regards,
Nadia

Re: Caliente Festival..

Hi Nadia, I've been twice last year, both times on the same day. The flyers say it opens around midday, which is when we went (hoping to have a decent lunch), there was almost nothing open. Just a few stands selling sweet corn and hats (). We then came back around 6 p.m. and it was definitely better -- more people, hence more "life".

The food is OK, although having been to Latin America, I wouldn't say it's "authentic". The Mexican stand we ate at wasn't great at all. You can get drinks all over the place -- decent mojitos at a Cuban stand. 10 to 15 chf for one. Hiltl (the oldest vegetarian rest in town that also operates as catering) has a stand as well. And of course there's music on every corner - mainly salsa and some random pop.

Assuming you're OK with loud music and some crowds that aimlessly drift around (due to lack of places to sit), I'd say give it a shot and go. Most people come in groups, so it might be a good idea to bring a couple of your friends along. Like any other public gathering, this one leaves lots of trash behind. (I always feel bad for the folks that need to stay behind and clean ).

Pls report back in case you go -- would be curious to see if anything has changed!

I've been wondering if it's worth the trip from Basel.

No, not really. Unless you get a free ride! It's not huge as I thought it would be. Others can disagree though since there are as many opinions as there are people...

Re: Caliente Festival..

Hi, I have been 3-4 times over the last few years, in the evening it is always very, very busy. The food is not good but the atmosphere is normally really good.

Going at midday is not a good idea as it all comes to life during the evening and carries on through the night. It is worth the trip from Basel in my mind.

Re: Caliente Festival..

I live near the langstrasse/ helvetia platz and there is definitely a vibe going on there for the whole weekend.

There's a lot of soundsystems and many bars like Latin Palace, El Presidente are doing alot of things around about that time.

One thing that is missing is like a carnival atmosphere but it's pretty good for Switzeraland!!

Re: Caliente Festival..

I'll be the dissenting voice, then: I really enjoy going to Caliente to eat.

Avoid the non-Latino food stands (Swiss meat skewers, "Chinese", baked potatoes, pizza, etc.) because they're ordinary fair fare. What I go for are:
- feijoada (Brazilian black bean stew)
- ceviche (raw fish marinated in lime juice; some places have junk ceviche made of cooked seafood, which makes me sad.)
- anticuchos (beef heart skewers — sound gross, but are absolutely divine)
- momos (Nepalese potstickers. Not latino, but made on-premises and are exceedingly delicious.)
- tamales (expensive, but good)

And of course caipirinhas and mojitos. Soo many caipis and mojitos… ::hiccup::

If anyone wants to meet up with me to find the good food at Caliente, just private message me on here and we can meet up.

Re: Caliente Festival..

I've gone a couple of times. If you've never been, and are curious, I'd say go. The food is pretty typical "festival food". Some good, some not. But the music is good, and I like the vibe. It's just a fun time to relax and enjoy a bit of "Swiss Ethnicity".

Here are some photos from past vists, so you can get the idea of the vibe. Enjoy!

Re: Caliente Festival..

And.....

I don't know if you guys like it, but I'm very excited to watch the fight between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen at UFC 148, in Las Vegas.

It will be quite late here, around 1am Saturday night, but I would love to watch it in a bar... Does anyone know about it?

Regards,
Nadia

Hi Nadia

I'm a big fan of Anderson Silva, so I'd definitely join you for the fight, even if I'd skip on the dancing afterwards.

Re: Caliente Festival..

Hi Simon,

that's great!!! I guess I'll be around Volkshaus, Kreis 4, so if we find a bar with a big screen, we can stop there.

What do you think?

Re: Caliente Festival..

The best food I had was Picana/Picanha. Grilled Brazillian beef, not sure what cut of meat it is, I think top sirloin. Really delicious, very juicy.

It was at a stand by the grass in Kaserne. You must try it if you like your meat.

Re: Caliente Festival..

Simon,

I'm so sorry, but I heard the Anderson Silva's fight will start around 5 or 6am (Sunday morning)... so, I don't have other choice, but only setting my alarm to this time.. :/
