can't eat cheese - can I enjoy the food in Switzerland

Hello,

I'll be coming to live in Switzerland in the next two months. I'm not supposed to eat cheese or dairy products. Do you think it will be possible for me to enjoy Swiss food and the eating experience in Switzerland? What can I do?

Hi Greengrass - welcome to the Forum!
Actually I am allergic to cheese but have amazingly survived for 2 1/2 years now . . . no problem.
I can even take visitors to Grumpygrapefruit`s English Cheese Stand at the Viadukt market.

Good luck here in Switzerland and maybe see you around.

I also am allergic to cheese....have not had any problems finding things to eat :-). There's more to Swiss cooking than fondue...just have the phrase "ich kann kein Kaese essen" / "je mange pas du fromage" handy (sorry if you are in Italian or Romansch area...no idea what to say there!)

Re: can't eat cheese - can I enjoy the food in Switzerland

No different here than anywhere else. I've been trying to eat vegan for the past few months and it's OK, with the one gripe, trying to find a decent tasting alternative to cow's milk. The soya, rice, oatmeal and coconut varieties are like tramp's piss .....

You just need to watch salad dressings, choose Italian or Basilikum over French and watch out for pizzas and pasta dishes when they tend to smother everything with cheese from the get go. There are a few vegetarian restaurants around, but just ask for fresh vegetables in case of doubt or prepare your own meals when you're out and about. I guess you about getting enough protein from beans and calcium etc.

You'll be fine, just avoid the English Cheese store run by Grumpy down at the Viadukt, I think he has a "Wanted" poster out for vegans!

Welcome to CH soon, Greengrass10. Mmmm, do not expect too much of the "Swiss eating experience", prepare at least half your meals and you'll be fine. You can make Alpen Magronen (macaroni) without cheese and cream, I guess. It's eaten with caramelised onion, bacon bits and applesauce.

You didn't say you're vegan, right? Then you'd be OK with Thai curries, some dishes in Italian restaurants, and most of the dishes served in Indian, Japanese and other Asian restaurants.

In typical Swiss restaurants, you can go for the Fitness Teller - usually a piece of fish, chicken or meat with a big salad on the side. There are vegetarian options but you'll have to let them know you should not eat dairy products: "Keine Milchprodukte, bitte!" (or something to that effect). Especially if you like soups.

If you like cooking or preparing your own food, you'd have a variety of fresh produce to pick from in supermarkets and farmer's markets, as well as items such as eggs, potatoes, apple juice, fruit jams and fresh fruit directly from farms.

Supermarkets and kiosks do sell prepared sandwiches and hot food pre-packed for lunch, but you'll have to check the ingredients list (or ask the vendor) to make sure you're OK with them.

I think you'll be fine, in the cities there seem to be restaurants for everyone - I'd recommend checking out a place like Hiltl/Tibits, great food and I think they would be happy to cater to your needs.

And I agree with argus, the swiss dishes are incredibly simple, usually, so don't worry

I don't know if they have it here, but I've always loved almond milk as an alternative. You can make it yourself quite easily, but I used to buy it when I was still living in Canada from the healthfood store. Soy cheese was just

Re: can't eat cheese - can I enjoy the food in Switzerland

Thanks all very much for the welcome and great suggestions on how to manage in switzerland without eating cheese or dairy products! Good to know it's feasible even for people with allergies and that there's hope for non-cheese eaters in Switzerland. And although I'm not a vegan (it's for health reasons), I'll remember to steer clear of grumpy grapefruit in case I get on his most wanted list ;-).

Re: can't eat cheese - can I enjoy the food in Switzerland

If you don't mind me asking, when you say "there's more to Swiss cooking than just fondue", for example what else is good from the menu? If you were to name your top 3 favorite Swiss (non-cheese/dairy) foods, what would they be?

Thanks Assasin. Any luck with specialized organic food shops in Switzerland? Sounds like I'll have to do a lot more of my own cooking.

Thanks Argus, great tips! That cheese less maracaroni sounds delicious and will try that fitness teller.

Good to know Dux. I like simple food. What Swiss dishes do you put on your list of favorite non-cheese/dairy foods?

Puhutes, great idea about the almond milk. Do you find there are shops or places to buy it in Switzerland, especially around Geneva?

Re: can't eat cheese - can I enjoy the food in Switzerland

There are all kinds of organic fresh produce as well as organic processed food in supermarkets in CH, labelled 'Bio'.

As for organic restaurants, do a 'Net search or try this?

Re: can't eat cheese - can I enjoy the food in Switzerland

You'll be just fine without cheese but you gotta skip two Swiss national dishes - cheese fondue and raclette.
What you can eat instead is for example fondue chinois (dipping meat in broth instead of bread in cheese) and beef tartar (raw meat, spiced up with tabasco, onions, pepper,...).

There are organic food stores but it'll be quite expensive when you buy all your groceries there. They don't sell many ready-made foods though but basic ingredients for your cooking.

Re: can't eat cheese - can I enjoy the food in Switzerland

As long as you ask them to keep the cheese away, Rösti is also good - basically grated potato fried in the pan, with a variety of bits shoved in ... and generally covered with melted cheese but, as I said, you can have it without. It still tastes good without cheese.

You couldn`t meet a nicer guy actually - despite the cheese, he has an excellent selection of beers for sale.
