Keeping Carrots

I don't know what I'm doing wrong... since I moved here, my carrots rot so quickly. I buy a bag and 2-3 days later I already have to throw them away. Often the date of packagine is maybe yesterday (so they are new and haven't been in the store too long). I have tried to keep them in the fridge and they go bad quickly that way too. What do you guys do to prolong the life of your Swiss carrots?

They are washed and are still damp in the bags. Buy them separately, on open display.

Agreed - don't keep or wrap in plastic and don't keep them too cold.

I did take it seriously... I was just hoping he wasn't going to make me take "a breathalyzer" like he did last time.

now, can we please stay on topic.

Interestingly, when carrots do go bad, alcohol is the main chemical produced in the skin which is why it tastes very bitter......but it's largely removed through peeling

Re: Keeping Carrots

I find that most of the vegetables rot here quickly. the life is only a day! i tend to buy vegetables daily now - whatever is required for the day. weekly thrice we have the farmer's market and the rest of the days i buy from Migros. if i am not able to use the vegetables the same day, the next day either the color has changed or its rotten already! i generally don't buy Bio.

Re: Keeping Carrots

AFAIK (from a Swiss co-worker), the problem is that esp. Migros keeps the stuff very cold at night and has it on open, uncooled display during the day.
A sure way to make stuff rot faster.

Thanks! That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I get usually the 2KG bag from Aldi and I am lucky if I can get through 1/3 before throwing them out And I also can see how you guys are right about no cooling. They are also left out all day at the current 30°C temp. No wonder they only last 2-3 days Thanks again!

If you buy them in a bag like this, maybe rinse them again and allow to dry separately in open air, then store with potatoes?

I'm hoping this may work, I've got a sack of carrots myself that I'm intending to make a carrot cake with tomorrow morning... if they're still any good.

Re: Keeping Carrots

I dump mine in the drawer section of the fridge with some paper towel wrapped around them to absorb the moisture. They always keep for at least 2 weeks.

Re: Keeping Carrots

Let me add, and my friend the grynch is correct... if you must put them in the fridge... do a couple of things (or a few)

1. keep them in the lowest part of the fridge in one of those veggie drawers
2. try to keep it as dry as possible in there
3. also, a trick I have learned since starting my green drink routine, and YES, this works, wrap them in tin foil. I mostly do this for my spinach since it is expensive and I never have a problem.

Hey Grynch... I am growing some potatoes on my balcony. I am thinking I should have 30-40 pounds when done (growing them in an upward fashion using layers)... i was thinking of making a quasi-root cellar for them, you know, cool, dry, wrapped in newspaper or something similar...

any tricks you know that might be better?

go to Migro?

sorry, I've never actually, by plan, grown 'taters ... I did find I had some growing in the middle of my compost pile once when I was back in the states but I think they just turned back to compost.

EDIT.. thinking about it newspapers might work but I'd be concerned with two things
1) mice
2) ink leaching into the 'taters, ( note leaching, not lynching )

try burlap? ... I get both rolls ( 5-6inch wide ) and sheets for protecting plants come winter time at Jumbo.

EDIT2" : just trying to keep up the image, that yes.. grynch DOES know everything
