They have a Mexican place in Niedel Dorf. The place has colorful chairs, and the food is really good. Although it is expensive. I think it's about 25-30CHF for a dish.
Hä? If it is in Niederdorf, how is the place called?

Tres amigos in Oerlikon was nice! Lunch menu can be affordable but nowhere cheap..

It's very good indeed, and not unreasonably priced, either. The food is delicious, the service very friendly, and the outdoor terrace a very pleasant place to waste an afternoon (while we were there a choir was practising in a nearby building... sublime!).

They also sell a few items of Mexican grocery like proper corn tortillas and stuff.

Homecooked maybe the way. Rick Bayless has a few good recipes:

Re: Where can you find cheap Mexican food in Zurich?

Attention! We found a good Mexican restaurant, reasonably priced in Altstetten, run by a guy from San Diego.

It's a blink and you miss it type place, set away from the main street, but very good Mexican food and Margaritas! And friendly service! Wow, what a concept.

Has anyone been to Cantina La Lupe? It opened in June, Luisenstrasse 43 near Limmatplatz. I live nearby but haven't been yet (nobody to go with and share the chips with!)

Re: Where can you find cheap Mexican food in Zurich?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned El Luchador (close to the Museum für Gestaltung tram stop). The good is very good, it's good value and my Mexican friends vouch for its authenticity. The atmosphere is also very nice - you can be there just having some beers or a good Michelada talking to people, and the owner puts nice music on (often Latin American rock music). I'd definitely recommend it.

Another nice place is El Burrito Feliz in Winterthur, not too far away from the train station. Very authentic, "homemade-style" Mexican food.

I went one time. Both my meal partner and I were disappointed. Not up to par in my opinion, I don't understand the adulation this place garners.

La Lupe, on the other hand, is the first Mexican place in Zurich to have a reasonably wide Mexican menu that is actually done well. (El Luchador is good, but the menu is tiny.) It's owned by a Croatian, IIRC, but the chef is Mexican, and that's what matters!

Now, if only someone would make chorizo tacos, AKA the best flavor tacos in existence...

Oh yeah, did I mention I'm 1/2 Central American and that lime juice runs through my veins?

La Lupe's owner told us he's from Lebanon, but you're right: what matters is that the chef is Mexican — in fact he used to be the chef at El Luchador.

We really enjoyed the food there, and wifey had one of the best margaritas she's ever had.

La Taqueria at Altstetterstrase 140A, 8048 Zurich is the best we've found. It's cheaper than the one at Oerlikon and tastier. By a long shot. And they have fresh peanut butter cookies. Just saying.

There's a new Mexican food shop in Zurich for those who want to roll their own, it's www.laguadalupana.ch and has good prices and a decent assortment.

Re: Where can you find cheap Mexican food in Zurich?

Tres Amigos. It's not exactly cheap, but not terribly unreasonable.
And as an American from a southern state abundant with great Mexican restaurants, I was pleasantly surprised to not be completely disappointed with the quality of the food.
There's one in Oerlikon, and I think another one somewhere around Zurich. Also, the same people (person, company, group, not sure) owns the "Stars and Stripes Bar and Grill" which I had never been to until an Italian friend of mine wanted me to take him there. Once again I was pleasantly surprised to have a cheese burger and onion rings that wouldn't have been out of place at any casual dining restaurant in the States (including the yellow cheddar cheese).
Side note: all of my friends who travel for work know that if they go to either England or America always have to bring back some cheddar for me because I have yet to find any yellow cheddar here in Switzerland.

I quite liked Tres Amigos... not quite the same as Mexican town in Detroit, but a lot closer than many of the other "Mexican" places in Zürich.

I'm sure Grumpygrapefruit can supply you with white cheddar. It is only fairly recently that Migros or Coop even started carrying Cathedral City cheddar. Be thankful you didn't arrive 25 years ago.

El maiz has yellow, mild cheddar that melts well. They also have a white cheese that's really great for chilies relleno or salads - i think it's made after a Venezuelan recipe.

Migros has a yellow mild cheese - I forget what they call it, but it's also a yellow cheddar.

Grumpy's cheese is fab, but you don't want to be melting that on a taco, and I find that cathedral cheddar doesn't melt well. It's greasy. In a pinch, I've used asiago fresca - easily available. If you want a pepper jack, sprinkle hot pepper flakes on it as you melt it.
