| | looking for cheap milk in Geneva
Hey Y'all.
Just settling here in Geneva, and while most of the culture shock is to be expected, I'm feeling the pain of buying milk for the kids at 1.90 per liter. Can anyone suggest where I might find the local equivalent of 2% skim milk for less than 8 bucks a gallon? I'd also be willing to go with whole milk straight from the tap if anyone knows of a friendly dairy farmer out near Collonge.

Drive out to the countryside, at about 3.00pm, bucket in hand and catch a cow.

Better to do it at night, ninja-style...
With night-vision goggles of course.
And be sure to ball-gag the cows so they don't moo. |

If you want cheaper than that, then UHT long-life on the shelves is the way to go.

Pick up a pamphlet on the way out from the Swiss border guards, telling you the limits on meat etc that you are allowed to bring back.
Funny, they never tell you that at the job interviews!

Coop sells 1.5% milk in a larger jugs at 1.75 liter. It should be labeled "Family Milk Drink", the bottle looks like this:
As for me, I get the UHT milk in the boxes in Germany (less easy from Geneva to be sure!), it's also 1.5% and as others have said, there is quite a difference in price (but check your allowances at the border).
I've been to France to buy groceries sometimes also, and there too, the price difference definitely makes it an advantageous trip.

Another advantage of Basel ... 10-15 minute cycle to a German supermarket. In Germany milk is heavily subsidised. I'm currently paying 48 cents for a litre of 1.5% (semi-skimmed) milk. Not sure what the VAT % is that I get back on this; I think it's 7%.
I go through quite a lot as I'm hooked on cafe lattes.
France isn't much cheaper than Switzerland for milk.

1,90 per L for milk From the in-laws, it's free... from our neighbour, it's 1,05... from Aldi for 1.5L it is (I think the price was just lowered to 1,39) Hope that helps

You can go in France (Saint-Julien-en-Genevois or some other towns) where farmers offer their fresh milk for one Euro/litre.
The price goes totally to the farmer and it's not heated. It's the best for the health.
(Most of the milk in Geneva comes from the French Area)

The customs limit is 5l of milk per person. Including UHT.
