Breakthrough discovery - warning cheese porn within

I spotted somebody with this on the conveyor belt at Migros Balaxert and got the good oil from him as to its whereabouts. There is now a packet in my fridge - woohoo.

Buried amongst the various continental muck it was. Apart from Grana Padana and a few others I am not rating the euro stuff.

Haven't tasted it yet so stay tuned. It is the real McCoy, made in England and reasonably priced too.

I think it has been described as Cheddar-flavoured cheese...

I was really disappointed when I tasted it then found out from my mum that she doesn't touch it with a barge-pole in the UK because it's a poor imitation (despite the intensive TV advertising campaign )

Try some of Grumpy's Godminster cheddar, you'll never touch Cathedral City again

It's ok for cheese on toast but it is not REAL cheddar. I'll be in Geneva 13th and 14th of October (and Morges 6th October), try mine for free and then report back. And don't be afraid of being honest, some people prefer industrial cheese

Not sure Grumpy has a retail arm in Geneva.

On a related not, A few days ago I also found some sliced "Cheddar" at Carrefour. It was a radioactive orange colour and tasted very ordinary. I am led to believe that Seppos have been raised to think this is the normal colour for Cheddar.

Also good for Mexican food (I'll be using some in my chicken enchiladas tomorrow).

Actually, I should have added that caveat to my post. I meant it not to sound like cheese snobbery, just didn't want Juddernaut to get his hopes up that it was a fabulous example of the Cheddar he's missing.

(I have no real weight as a cheese critic, being the shameless snaffler of Coop's Prix Garantie Brie )

ITYF that's for Pilgrim's choice, not cathedral city.

And anyway, they're both of them not half bad. Sure, there are 'better' Cheddars out there, including a rather nice proper round farmhouse one to be found in our local E.LeClerc, but for everyday use, sarnies, cheese sauce, other cooking uses, it beats any of the French stuff into a cocked hat.

Yes, Pilgrim's Choice also has an ad campaign going but Cathedral City has been at it too...

Not sure what a 'Seppo' is, but the fresh cheese counter at carrefour mulhouse has fairly consistently stocked both a red cheddar and a much more nutty mature farmhouse one, for several years.

The French don't quite know how to keep and treat it though, so it's often allowed to become to dry, and they always try to slice it into pieces about six inches square and therefore only about a cm thick, which invariably results in much breakage. I've only succeeded in avoiding this by buying it in chunks of about a kilo and slicing it into four when I get home.

Oz term for a person from the States. "Seppo" stems from "Septic tank" = "Yank".

Here endeth todays's English lesson.

Re: Breakthrough discovery - warning cheese porn within

Seriously though, Cathedral City is better than most industrial cheddars, but it is still a very long way off what real Cheddar should be (and is). It is also much cheaper than hand made raw milk cloth wrapped cheddar and is fine for most people.

6th October in Morges - British Classic Car Show, Pimm's and Ploughmans by the Lake

13th October I'll be at Moevenpick Wine just outside of Geneva for free wine and cheese tasting.

14th October I'll be at the Expat-Expo in central Geneva.

You can try all my cheeses for free and I'll have at least 2 cheddars as well as British ale and lots of other goodies.
