Venison is available as both "hirsch" and "reh" here, the hirsch is stag, reh is doe - both quite tasty, although hirsch is more common (and makes for more sustainable eating, as usual).
Actually Hirsch is the slightly larger Fallow Deer, Reh is the smaller Roe Deer. Different breeds rather than male or female. Although a lot of Swiss get that wrong as well. Plus they are not always consistent on the labelling - I've seen Red Deer (Rotwild) described as Hirsch for example.

Reh tastes better imo.

Horse??Deer??Hare??Boar????Is that what Swiss people eat??WOW!When I said red meat, I wasn't exactly thinking about horses....
As a fan of Spur restaurants you must have eaten plenty of horse. Don't you recall they got into trouble for selling horsemeat burgers as juicy beef burgers?

Please mind the difference between Hase (hare) and Kaninchen (rabbit).
Yup, that's why I said I'd not had hare, but spring rabbit is great... to show that there is (and I know) a difference.

Ahhh, ok. Thanks for clarifying. This I didn't know, as when I asked, I was explained the way I said.

I'll make sure to try the Reh this year - the deer stew I made last year with hirsch was fab though.

Re: Craving Red Meat

I miss red meat too, we have had a few steaks in restaurants that fill the void. Sausages are good but they don't hit the spot, you know? I have started with an iron supplement here because of my new 'diet'.

To the east of Avenches are fields of Bison, every year they always disappear around the beginning of December.

What's the difference between a buffalo and a bison?

Re: Craving Red Meat

Apparently aside from the once almost driven to extinction American Bison, there exists a european Bison who is descended from the Auerochs, a historical early cattle.

From a NA perspective, there is no difference.

Apparently, according to those coming from London SW3, one can't wash ones hands in a buffalo.

Re: Craving Red Meat

Looks like we have a lot of city kids here:

Kaninchen:

=

Hase:

=

And a Hirsch is WAY bigger than a Reh as well:

Hirsch:

Reh

And a Bison is a close relative of a Buffalo, but not the exact same: They are smaller and orginially lived in wide parts of Europe.

Seems that true buffalo died out, although they are still referred to as "buffalo" in North America but are actually bison.

A smaller bison is native to Europe.

I like a good old Wiki-session with my coffee in the morning.

There never were buffalo in NA, just bison (just like Americans call what in Europe is called an elk, a moose).

Buffalo can be readily be found in Africa, Italy (to make mozzarella) and many other places.

Re: Craving Red Meat

We have 2 large herds of bisons near us, to make mozzarella, called bufflone. They disappear in late autumn most to inside barns - very few to the butcher's.

Ummm, bufflone are buffalos, and NOT bison!

Re: Craving Red Meat

I just missed a deal on some Kangaroo, less than Chf20kilo from www.carnacenterwinterthur.ch I might have to sign up for their offer newsletter. The local Denner actually had some a couple of weeks ago but it was not the greatest. Salivating in the morning is not good!!

Just an aside, I was informed by an Indian friend that for religious reasons, she wasn't permitted to eat beef, but bison was totally acceptable. Can any Indians confirm this?
