Lidl, Coop and migros do have decent maple syrup. For those of us who had been accustomed to small batch from local growers itís not the same, but better than nothing! I will soon be purchasing from one or multiple private Canadian syrup importers and will share if they are better than the stores as the price point is very similar.
we go thru the stuff like water. would love to hear who the importers are, if that is no secret. thanks.

Sure! I was just too lazy to look them up yesterday.

Here’s the one I’m going to try this week—they sell in many shops near me so I don’t have to order a big quantity. But the prices on the litres is not bad. Not super cheap either, but then it IS maple syrup we’re talking about. They also sell te spreadable kind which is a huge plus for me

There is also this one. Not sure if it was already mentioned? https://apalac.ch/produit/beurre-erable/

Re: Mayple syrup.

Always pictured my grade A coming direct from the Canadian woods.
How can one be so disillusioned?

Re: Mayple syrup.

I just discovered this producer's stall at the Lausanne market.

He makes his own maple syrup (and butter) in Vermont : https://www.vermontmaple.ch/

For your info, he told me that he's going back to Vermont in April and May as it's maple season, so he won't be at the market for a couple of months ... just in case you were planning on going soon ...

His stall is located in the same street as Globus.

Re: Maple syrup.

The maple is always there in the little bio section at the end of the fruit and veg aisle, no need to wait for American week.

Re: Maple syrup.

I use ambrť and buy the 540 mL tin from this guy. I'm accustomed to the packaging. Might be able to find a better price elsewhere but no hassle with him.

Well sure but then it is the same price as the one at the Coop. The American week one is much cheaper. Not bio but ... honestly I am not too worried about my tree sap being bio or not.

Don't get me wrong, but have never ever seen anyone trucking off into the woods to spray insecticide or fungicide on to any maple trees.

Thatís what I mean. I donít understand why so many on the market here brag about ďbioĒ and charge more per bottle due to that. Who sprays their maple trees? Anyway. Iím happy to pay for quality maple syrup. If Iím just going to buy from Lidl, Coop, etc, then Iím going to go for the absolute cheapest and save the good stuff for myself ha!

Trees can be sprayed from the air, or an entire area fumigated - but more commonly they are injected/implanted. The pesticide then mixes with the sap, and goes to the leaves to kill pests....

We get out mango trees (not in CH) injected at the end of the fruiting season, as otherwise the termites would overrun them... the hope is that by the next fruiting season the chemicals are flushed out...

No doubt there are many ways to treat trees, but sugar maples in eastern Canada and the northeastern USA tend to do fine on their own. Not like ash, where if you look at them the wrong way, they get devoured by ash borers.

Also, Aldi sells the homogenized "bio" grade A stuff pretty cheap. My kids make it disappear on a weekly basis. I'm holding out for some self-imported small batch Grade B from Vermont.

Just had some of the Lidl stuff - far too sweet and light for my taste. Tasted more like golden syrup than maple syrup
