Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

My husband, myself and a friend went to the Fish n Chips place in Markthalle Friday night. It was good.

We were there around 6:30 and had the stand to ourselves The owner was very friendly and I told him about this thread

Anyway... the fish was nice (not sure which type) but we liked that it wasn't cut too thick and the batter wasn't overwhelming. My husband liked the vinegar (I don't use vinegar so I can't weigh in) and the chips were very good. He's working on thicker chips in the coming days, so we may have to go back and give it another try

Oh - and the homemade lemonade was also tasty. Not overly sweet. We'll certainly go back for another meal.

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

I recently went to Koreahof with a friend: Very good food, extremely friendly service, child friendly - highly recommended. I tried Kimchi and Bibimbap and Kimchi and liked it a lot. While I cannot personally attest to whether or not the food is genuine, the other guests were Koreans, and my friend who has travelled to Korea also confirmed that it was the real deal. To me, a real find.

The Korea Hof has closed.

Dear Guests,

After almost 9 exciting years the Restaurant Koreahof is closing its doors by the end of September 2015. It was truly an interesting and joyful journey to welcome you as our guests. Initially we planned to close the restaurant by the end of this year. However, due to an unexpected water damage in the building we are forced to say goodbye on 30 September.

We are very grateful to all of you who have supported and visited us through these years. You made this an unforgettable time for us, which we’ll keep in good memory.

All the best!

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

Asica is really good and an interesting African/Asian mix cuisine. Prices are decent and at the end of the meal, every table gets a bottle of homemade flavored rum... there is an assortment of flavors (Mango, chili pepper, etc.) but each table only gets one flavor. So, if you want to try the other flavors, you have to ask the other tables to trade... this creates a very cool, lively environment where everyone is sharing booze... lots of fun! Great place to start a fun night out!

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

Last Sunday we went to visit a friend in a Basel hospital, and based on this thread I searched for somewhere to eat lunch in north Basel. What could be harder than having a Sunday Lunch in north Basel? The search turned out to be very difficult, as most of the EF recommended places were closed all day on Sunday.

We had a very nice lunch at the recommended Marmaris Restaurant (on 116 Spalenring 4055 Basel) I had roast lamb shanks, my partner ate vegetarian. Good service, good Turkish style food, sensible prices.

https://www.google.ch/#q=marmaris+basel

PS. I mentioned above the Korea Hof has closed: yes the original did close, http://www.moneyhouse.ch/en/u/koreah....014.551-2.htm

but I see there is now a new KoreaHof, with same address (closed on Sunday), new owners, and new website, but confusingly the original website is still operating...

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

Olive is terrific, but also a bit more upscale. But really good food and great service.

A good Italian is Centro.

Kohlmann's is fine too, though tends to be a bit overrated - it gets raving reviews and while it's good, the hype is a bit too much imo.

White House in Rheinfelden is one of my favorites too

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

We just ate at El Mexicano on Steinentorstrasse the other night and give it two thumbs up. I was disappointed that they do NOT have burritos (my go-to Mexican dish) but the quesadilla was plenty good.

I do not recommend the margarita - nothing traditional about it at all and it was disappointing.

Yes the business you linked to closed in 2008 over 7 years ago.

Looks like they sold the business

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

This looks scary. A city the importance of Basel and just two pages of recommendations?
I'm a sucker for Balkan food - Greek, Turkish, ex-Yugoslavian, you name it, I'll eat it. Living in Germany, I'm quite spoiled for choice as far as Balkan stuff is concerned, so I was shocked to find out the almighty Google knows no Greek place in Basel, but just one in Münchenstein and the other in Weil am Rhein. Any others?

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

It is a sad testimony to the downfall of Swiss gastronomy that the question need be asked. At one time there was little or no bad food to be had; every buffet de la gare was good. (My great aunt by marriage, a couple of times removed, ate lunch every day for a couple of decades in the Buffet de la Gare in Oberwil BL across the street from where she lived.)

No such restaurant, in fact no such train station, shows up on Bahnhofstrasse on Google Maps so maybe it's a false memory. But the memory of good food all over Switzerland in the 1960s and maybe through 1990 is not. Nor the realisation that a train station is no longer a good place to eat (think: Geneva train station). Nor even, mostly, the trains. Except maybe the Chocolate Train?

The Buffet della Stazione at Lugano is still very good, and well worth the money.

Great pizza at great prices as well.

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

We've found many good and inexpensive restaurants in Saint Louis in France, literally a couple minutes from Basel city center. All sorts.. French, Chinese, Indian.. and for a fraction of the price you pay in Switzerland. Just Google "restaurant saint louis france", and click on the map.

The chocolate here is so good, far better than what I grew up with but the restaurants are wayyyy too expensive for what they are.
I was in London over New Year and the food was just great! I can truly recommend the social Eating house in SoHo.
