Good Restaurants in Basel

I have been living here in Basel for a while now and I still am unable to find any really nice restaurants to eat at. Does anybody have any suggestions as my family are flying over next week!

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

If you're not looking for a budget place, I've eaten at Restaurant Bella Italia on Rumerlinbachweg (near Heuweg). REALLY good food and service (the service part might have been due to who I was with)

I had beef there, which was seasoned and cooked perfectly. No one at our table of 7 had an ounce of a complaint

simply, there are none.
Just go to France or Germany, plenty of nice restaurants around and you do not need to leave an arm and a leg when the bill comes.

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

Germany and France are value for money. You could have breakfast in Switzerland, lunch in France and dinner in Germany. We have done this often with visitors and they love it. Back to the ? We went to China King opposite the train station in Basel. Friendly staff. Small menu but everything was fresh and value for money. We paid 64 CHF for 2 people, starter, 3 drinks and 2 main courses.

The Three Kings / Dreikönigen is very good. I had a lovely meal there one lunchtime at 80CHF for the set menu.

Hey there,

I am new to basel as well, just came in Jan and i am exploring new restaurant every week.

I would suggest:

1. La FOnda for Mexican at Markplatz.
2. Rhywera near MitteBrucke for Elegant dining. Its small but good.
3. Roberto at SBB for Good Italian
4. Margaretia at Steienvorstadt 62 for Italian.
5. Sams for a good Take away Turkish.

I am continuing my weekly new restaurant search and will let you know if i discover more , you guys are welcome as well in the exploration journey.

Quite enjoyed Vapianos last night -- , decide what you'd like and walk up to the counter and order-- watch it prepared for you and voila!
Great home made pasta, informal dining with friends, quick and friendly service at reasonable prices!

3 minute walk from Aeschenplatz stop.

Vapiano.
Average, and it is not cooked before you. You get a card that they scan an they buzz you when it is ready. Give your card at the check out and pay. No atmosphere and fast food really. Overated.

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

Not been to Vapiano here as it's close to triple the price of the one in Stuttgart (it's a German chain I believe, although I walked past the one in London yesterday and it's also less than half the price of the Swiss one).

The pizzas are cooked and you're paged when it's ready but the pastas are (or used to be) cooked in front of you. It's kind of like having stir-fy noodles Italian style. I liked the Stuttgart one as for 6€ you got a great pasta dish, freshly cooked.

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

Not quite a restaurant, the Markthalle by the train station has a variety of ethnic foods with low prices. Also very tasty. I found out about it from this blog post: http://www.onebigyodel.com/2014/08/w...nd-zurich.html

We had some delicious Thai food there on Thursday.

Dunno it others overrate it, but it's close by the office I worked in for... well before the restaurant opened. Anyway, I never liked it. The pizza isn't as good as other nearby places, and apart from that it's just pasta and stuff. Which doesn't count as food in my book.

The ordering system should work well, but in practice you still find yourself queuing to order your food, and like many Swiss places, you need to know which queue to join before you join it, so if you get it wrong you may have to queue all over again.

Not my fave place for lunch, and I wouldn't even think about if of an evening.

I can second that this one is very good! The street is Rumelinbachweg just a stones through from the city center. Its Sicilian style Italian food with friendly staff.

Re: Good Restaurants in Basel

Hmm....places we used to visit in Basel when we lived there.

Marmaris on Spalenring was always one of our favorites. It also is just a few blocks from the shop that makes Fasnacht masks for the clique I play with - so often go there for a bite when I am in Basel getting my head measured.

The Kornhuus near Universität used to have quite an eclectic menu - and a Scottish chef.

Die Vierte König was also a regular haunt of ours. Parterre next to the Kaserne. I used to like the Fischerstube and the Linde next door. Gifthuttli for slabs of cheese covered meat.

Did the Chateau Lapin ever reopen? They did the best Rösti.

St Albanstübli - bit pricey but I always liked it.

Have to say I was never impressed by the Safranzünft.

The one thing I find with many restaurants in Basel is whenever I have been with the clique on an organised outing you get top notch food and service. A good example of this is the Löwenzorn - we often eat in the Guild rooms upstairs during Fasnacht and they really go out of their way to please. But go as a civilian and I find the food and service to be mediocre at best.

Cheers,
Nick

I usually take visitors to Tibits (vegetarian buffet) as it's quite unique and tasty. Usually CHF 20-40 per plate depending on how greedy one is!
