Re: Where can I buy sumac and pomegranate molasses?

According to an older EF thread, there is one in Oerlikon:

"Alkan Comestibles
Nansenstrasse 4

This is a small side street that is across from the Marktplatz. The store specializes in Turkish and Lebanese products. It is the best place in the area to buy feta cheese (make sure you buy the vacuum-packed ones and not the pre-packaged and labeled variety). The meat here is also quite good, and is a great place to source chicken, lamb, and veal. Neither the husband nor the wife speak english, so basic german skills are necessary if you have questions... "

Re: Where can I buy sumac and pomegranate molasses?

I like a certain type of chile (biber aleppo) that I can only get at such shops, but I know sumak is readily available as I have some from the same shop (Cassarate area of Lugano).

There's a shop called Fermo in Affoltern at Wehntalerstr. 530, Tel: 043 960 11 06. I've bought sumac there before, but it wasn't the best quality of sumac to be honest.

There's a shop in Albisreiderplatz called "Maxi" where I've bought pomegranate paste...

And there's a persian shop called -- well, no idea what it's called, but it is here

Re: Where can I buy sumac and pomegranate molasses?

Both can be found in a Turkish shop as others have pointed out. Look for "Nar Eksisi" on the label for Pomegranate molasses. Sumac is "Sumak".

Just to let everyone know that I went down to EGE market today and found everything I was looking for and more. It's a brilliant little shop and the gentlemen there was very helpful although he didn't speak any English.

Re: Where can I buy sumac and pomegranate molasses?

I get my sumac from Aligros in Geneva. They also have the pomegranate paste and lots of other goodies besides.

Just be careful with Turkish sumac. It is generally coarser and not as strong as the Lebanese ones Iíve used so I grind mine down with a mortar and pestle and adjust the amount to get the usual punch I need in various dishes.
