Goose for Christmas

I know it's a little bit early to be thinking about, but.. does anyone know where to buy a goose for roasting around the Zürich area, even if only sold during the Christmas season?

Re: Goose for Christmas

Oerlikon market (wed and Saturday) or helvetiaplatz market (fri), family Pfiechter (I think that's the spelling) who have a truck along the side. You could preorder one anytime.

Re: Goose for Christmas

Manor can generally get me any animal and size I want, given one week's warning.

Turkey, duck, pig, goat, lamb, etc.

Haven't asked for a goose, but I would expect no problem.

Additionally, I would like to congratulate you on your working on integrating here in Switzerland. It is exactly that early planning that makes the Swiss very efficient!

Re: Goose for Christmas

Right on Christmas, I've even seen them in the freezer at the larger Migros supermarkets. If you want one for "Thanksgiving" then you might need to order one in from a local Butcher...

Re: Goose for Christmas

Bring this one back to life... as would like to do Goose for Christmas.

What prices would one expect to pay in CH per kg and what size bird do you suggest getting for 10 adults?

Is it worth ordering one in a French supermarket to save money? I am based in Zurich, and while I have seen turkeys in Migros I don't recall seeing Goose.

I would say something in the order of 8 kg. Google "weihnachtsgans bestellen" and limit your hits to Switzerland. You'll probably have trouble getting an 8kg bird, but you might get two, or a 6kg one with quadruple legs or breasts.

400-500g/person (cleaned weight), so 5kg min.

Re: Goose for Christmas

I bought one from www.gefluegelgourmet.ch about two years ago - it was very good, about 3.5 kg, but not cheap. www.weidegans.ch has a list of local farmers/producers by canton.

Be wary of import tax payable on weight above the limit. Not sure what the current rate is for goose but if saving money is part of your calculation, make sure that getting stopped at the border doesn't make it a futile exercise.

All meat is around CHF 20/kg, doesn't matter what.

4x that if you don't declare it and they catch you, plus the original 20.

I bought one from a local farmer a few years ago, I don't recall how many kg's it was, but it was around 150 CHF and it fed 6 people. So I would say for 10 people expect to pay at least probably around 250 CHF. Definitely wasn't cheap, but it was so delicious I would really like to do it again.
