I still miss my Dan Murphy's drive-in bottleshop.. my liver is grateful that I don't drink as much over here though...

Just in case there is any thought that a "colonist" does not know as much about beer as their "native born cousins", allow me to show this picture.
In this picture, this is only about 1/5 of the beer selection at our (former) local Whole Foods (only about 2/5s is kept in the cold box). If you look closely you will see three different Chimays, most Samuel Smiths, Leffe, Delirum, etc etc. These are the "common beers" ready for drinking. Outside of this walk-in you have the other 3/5s of "less common" beers that includes most beers from Belgium, more-than-you-can-count German and Austrian beers, even more obscure US micros, English beers, French beers and...surprisingly...a healthy selection of SWISS BEERS.
Its laughable that I've seen and bought more beers from the Jura in the US than I have from BOTW Zurich (however, BOTW Luzern does in fact have more Jura beers than Zurich).
I miss Whole Foods. | | | | | Same story with potato chips. mmmmm

I've just come from the US to Basel and I'm really missing the beer selection I was used to. Any suggestions where I can buy stuff that isn't Swiss lager? Hoppy IPA, German lager, or British ales would all be fine. I don't have a car or even a bike (yet). I guess there's maybe something in Weil, which I could get to by tram, but Basel would be easier.

Yes, I went to place by the SSB today. Predictably expensive, but I was disappointed by the selection.

As a beer lover of many years I've come to the conclusion that the only logical choice for me is drinking the local beers of the area I'm staying at. If I crave an American beer, I consider travelling to America.
I've been doing it pretty often |

On my last hunting trip to local Coop I saw these guys and couldn't resist to grab a 4-pack of Weissbier.

TBH Migros is quite poor with alcohol - most brands in fact. Most migros stuff on sale is Migros home brands. If you want worldwide brands, try Coop. I myself am quite partial to Bulmers and Coop in Sargans is the only place I have found it. Other than that I am stuck with Moscht from Migros - which is nowhere near the same quality.
There's also apparently a place in Triesen, Liechtenstein along the river Rhine which sells worldwide stuff, or they will apparently import it for you especially if they don't have it. Not used them yet myself, but this is what I am told.

As mentioned earlier, http://www.erzbierschof.ch/web/biershop/brauereien.html has a great selection, and are now in Winterthur as well. If you see something you like, you can order and pick or have it delivered. With a little searching, you can find quite a few good options that are made in Switzerland, and its even improved in the short time I've been here. Especially good: Rappi, Storm and Anchor, and Birrificio Ticinese - the last even has great American Style Pale Ales in 350 ml cans for a reasonable price. If you come Neuchatel way, check out http://augraindorge.ch/magasins/neuchatel/ - they have everything Belgian you might want, plus quite a lot more. Or ping me - there are a few places around Neuch that have an interesting option or two available.

I don't know why you are talking about a selection when there is no alcohol.
Migros bought Denner to circumvent this issue. Denner is basically a discount filled with wine boxes.

If you can get over to Germany, like Lörrach by Basel, there is a great (and CHEAP) selection of beer and other drinks at Getränke Hoffman. So worth the drive over the border.
Otherwise, I can highly recommend Ittinger Klosterbrau.

I see alcohol for sale there in Ostschweiz, don't know about western/central, but they definitely have Suure Moscht, Feldschlossen, Calanda and other swiss beer brands in migros.

It does seem, however, that you are also half-correct. My trips to larger supermarkets like Sargans in Pizolpark, they sell neither alcohol nor cigarettes there, however, in Roxymarkt and Sunnamarkt in Liechtenstein (both smaller migros supermarkets) both are sold in these shops.

Definitely does explain why there is somewhat more of a choice with brands there.

If you see any beer at Migros, it's non-alcoholic. If you want to buy alcohol at Migros anywhere throughout Switzerland, you have to do that in the form of Brennsprit (denatured alcohol), window cleaner, perfume, disinfection pads, cheese fondue or Kirschstengeli, but I'm not sure about the latter.

I know that, but in the post I referred to, you clearly spoke about Migros in Ostschweiz. As far as I can tell, Liechtenstein isn't in Ostschweiz.
