Well that does certainly explain a lot, like their being open on bank holidays and sundays (despite sundays being a national religious day across Swiss and FL). Definitely does explain why there is somewhat more of a choice with brands there.
Those partners do NOT belong to Migros and often are in special locations like petrol shops and so can sell wines and beers

Switzerland and Liechtenstein have lots of excemptions to the basic laws

Migros became large when it had to replace the brands with products of its own. When Migros pushed prices down to less then 60% of the average brands related retail prices, the brands boycotted Migros, Migros reacted by either establishing factories of its own or by purchasing companies like Chocolats Frey (replacing Lindt) and Aproz (replacing Henniez etc) and Delizia/Delica

COOP, previously LV.... (Lebensmittelverein ....) and KV.... (Konsumverein....) not only for ages was far more expensive than Migros and more old-fashioned, but never had problems with brands as this Co-operative had the clout of the Social Democratic Party behind it

Re: Good Beer -- Where Can You Buy It?

Restaurant-wise, Fork and Bottle has a good selection.
For purchasing, I go to Jelmoli - they have a pretty decent selection.
Beers from everywhere - hard to find brands too - our favorite.

LeShop (Migros) has a decent selection of Belgian and other imported beers, as well as Swiss brews. What's best - they deliver them cold .

Aligro in Schlieren. Huge selection. Anchor Steam!
You need a customer card, but they will issue you one on the spot and it costs nothing. Only accessible by car.

It's a Costco type place with huge shopping carts. Lots of other stuff to, but for another thread. Free parking in the underground garage.

I second Aligro. Although it IS (just about) doable by public transport too, although that obviously limits how much you can buy! Bus 307 goes to Juchhof, it's only a 5-minute walk from there.

In Zch-HB, above lines 22/23/24 in the Bhf-section Landesmuseum, you can find the "Beers-of-the-world" shop with an amazing selection of beers

Migros btw. does not sell alcoholic beverages in its main-line stores. But does do so in Migrolino, Denner, Globus
the store is called Drinks of the World but other than that, completely agree, they have a great selection!

Yeah I did specify previously that the stores I were thinking of, as did other people, that they are partners and not real Migros stores.

There was me thinking Coop would always have been Coop haha for an outsider this knowledge isn't so simple, especially since the UK, Scandinavian countries and many other European countries all have Coop stores - which all sell similar products to each other. Coop in CH is, for example, incredibly similar to Coop in the UK. Migros is also actually quite like Sainsburys, with the exception of the alcohol and tobacco sales policies Migros have in place.

But yeah, there are a lot of choices for finding world Beers and other alcohols. Coop in their larger stores even have a nice choice, including from Canada, UK, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and more. Then of course as someone said previously, there is also Leshop which is operated by Migros. These are the handy stores to explore if an importer isn't local to you.

Apparently there is one bar in Zürich which sell it officially which is called Liquid Bar.

As for retailers, according to Rich on another thread:

Drinks of the world in Zurich Main Station sell Bulmers, Strongbow and Kopparberg ciders, used to be a big Strongbow fan myself, but addicted to Bulmers now (i know they are the same company just Bulmers original seems to taste much better over here than strongbow.
The thread can be found here: strongbow

Drinks of the World's complete catalog can be seen here: http://beerworld.ch/upload/pdf/biers...h_bierstil.pdf

Re: Good Beer -- Where Can You Buy It?

As a big old beer geek, I can say that the best place for beer in Switzerland, bar none, is Erzbischof (one in Winterthur and one in Bern-Liebefeld). They are primarily beer bar,s but both locations have extensive beer selections. They are reminscent of US craft beer bars/bottle shops.

http://www.erzbierschof.ch/web/

They also have an online shop.

You won't find the usual, run-of-the-mill suspects here. They stock high-end craft beer from around the world, and regularly get excellent stuff in.

It *is* on the pricier side, but so long as you understand that decent beer does cost more, and factor in import costs to Switz, then the prices are actually not so bad.

You do get what you pay for at this place. Highly recommended.

Re: Good Beer -- Where Can You Buy It?

Stone Brewery from San Diego is building a brewery in Germany! That means soon we should be able to enjoy Stone IPA, Levitation and of course the cult classic Arrogant Bastard! I love every beer from Stone and it doesn't surprise me how far they've come considering how good their beers are.

I've just come from the US to Basel and I'm really missing the beer selection I was used to. Any suggestions where I can buy stuff that isn't Swiss lager? Hoppy IPA, German lager, or British ales would all be fine. I don't have a car or even a bike (yet). I guess there's maybe something in Weil, which I could get to by tram, but Basel would be easier.
Hey there friend. I too recently moved from Ireland to Basel and miss the craft beers big time - it has really taken off at home.

Anyway, after some digging round, there are some good options for craft beers here.

There is a brand new bar open in the Markthalle with a nice range of craft beers that is definitely worth checking out.

There was a craft beer festival over the summer at St.Johann which had a great range of local brews.

One particular one that stuck in mind is the Gleis Eins brewery - https://www.facebook.com/gleiseins.bier - they do a great pale ale and their shop is actually right beside Bahnhof St.Johann you can drop in and get your hands on a box of beer

Brauebude is another one I bumped into there - http://www.braubudebasel.ch/ - they are actually in the process of renovating a property in kleinBasel where they run brewing classes / tasting etc... - https://wemakeit.com/projects/braubude-basel

At this link - http://www.baslerbiermarkt.ch/ - you will find the full list of breweries who were there that day complete with links.

So there is loads going on, you just have to keep the ear to the ground !

Peace

IL

Thanks HA. I have over 40 different British and Belgian beers (inc the elusive Duval triple hop) in stock right now. Drink at my bar and take home and I do discounts by the case.

Agreed, Rappibierfactory makes the best Swiss beer.
Do you have any Westvleteren?

I know a guy in the beer business who keeps saying he can get me some but has been trailing excuses for about two years now.

Sad really, seeing he's the guy who introduced me to it in the first place.

Now there's a genuinely elusive beer that can command an elusive price.

Kaiser Franz has some on and off though. But I really want some for at home.

Re: Good Beer -- Where Can You Buy It?

Coop in Lupfig has a two little sections of special beers, including some English ones, at the end of the alcoholic's aisle. The selection varies from week to week. I do treat myself to one or two (minimum) bottles from time to time (well, every time I go, actually).

Coop in Mellingen does not have such a selection. Boo.

Re: Good Beer -- Where Can You Buy It?

Last weekend I picked up a pair of Germans. First up was the Radeburger Pils - which when compared even to a pretty good Swiss Lager - was fantastic. Crisp, clean and not overly gassy.

I also a Weizen Doppelbock - which tasted nowhere near as potent as the 8% would have suggested.

Both picked up in the Drinks Shop in Maur

I don't like it.

I like beer and i love craft beer but i really hate this new beer snobbism. Erzbierschof only serves 2.5dl sizes. Thats no size for a beer. Beer is the drink of the working class and you're supposed to drink a good amount of it, at least a whole Pint, better two and the first one at a gulp. Good Beer should not only taste really good but also quench one's thirst. I don't want to sip it, swirl it like wine and stick out my little finger while drinking it. Erzbierschof can keep his beer samples if he's not willing to serve a real pint after that.

Re: Good Beer -- Where Can You Buy It?

I just passed by a newly opened store with hundreds of beers from all over the world. They also have gluten free beer. It is in Universitätsstrasse 25, between tram stops ETH/Universitätsspital and Haldenbach.

Details: www.beersnmore.com

And if you go there, a little further up Universitätsstrasse is the restaurant Zur Linde / Linde Oberstrass, which brews its own beer.
